Beliefnet: American Idol: A behind the scenes, in person recap of the Top 10 Guys & Girls results show

Last night, America watched on television as Jermaine Sellers, John Park, Haeley Vaughn and Michelle Delamor were sent home on American Idol.

Gospel Soundcheck reader Brittany Keener, who is also the assistant editor and office manager for the Christian Examiner newspapers, won tickets to last night’s performance. She and her sister Karalee got a front row seat to the show – figuratively speaking – and give us a first person recap of what we saw – and didn’t get to see – last night on American Idol.

And there are a few surprises!

Possibly one of the greatest days of my life…

For those of you who do not know, I won Danny Gokey’s new CD from KSON 97.3 in San Diego. This last Monday I was placed in a drawing to win tickets to his appearance on American Idol that Thursday. Sure enough, Danny Gokey announced me as the winner! I received a limo ride to and from LA [photo right] and two tickets to sit in the audience during the result’s taping.

But hey, at least last season’s Danny Gokey showed up to perform live and give this week’s crestfallen castoffs some hope. Danny traveled a rough road last year (he was famously widowed right before his audition, then he didn’t make it all the way to the finale as everyone had predicted). But his optimistically titled debut album, My Best Days Are Ahead of Me, just came out and debuted in the iTunes top 10. And with a Sugarland tour ahead of him, he’s sure to sell even more records throughout America’s heartland, despite his many personal and professional setbacks. Therefore Danny was in understandably in good spirits Thursday, rattling off one of his mile-a-minute motivational-speaker sermons while Ryan tried to get a word in edgewise and the “Idol” band members practically reached for their violins.

Let this week’s rejects look to Danny Gokey as proof that all is not lost when one loses on “Idol.” Or something like that.

USA Today: Danny Gokey returns to ‘American Idol’

Danny Gokey’s back, performing My Best Days Are Ahead of Me. It’s good to see him on this stage singing a song that he’s intimately familiar with, that’s perfectly suited for him. It’s a good, solid performance, and I’ve got to think his casual fans from last season that haven’t really heard this song on country radio will be pleased to discover it.

Since Ellen didn’t get a chance to judge him last season, Ryan gives her the opportunity now. “I thought you were fantastic,” says Ellen. “We’re putting you through.” Then Danny bucks for a spot on her show.

Danny relays his story about Randy Travis recommending him consider a career in country and says that conversation set him on his path to Nashville. He also says that he just found out that one of the writers of My Best Days Are Ahead of Me also lost his wife and wrote the song just few months afterward. Danny says he latched onto the song without ever knowing the story.

AmericanIdol.com: Exclusive Interview with Danny Gokey

This is a big week for Season 8’s third place finalist Danny Gokey. He released his debut album, My Best Days, today. On Thursday, Danny will return to the American Idol stage to perform on the live results show. We caught up with the country crooner this afternoon to find out more about his album, his upcoming tour, his Idol performance, and more.

When asked how he was feeling today, Danny said, “Like a million bucks. This is a dream come true. I’m so happy with everything.” It was less than one year ago that Danny Gokey was an American Idol contestant, and now he has released his debut album. He explains that this past year has been “Busy, busy, busy. I moved to Nashville and I’m watching things fall into place. I’m enjoying life. American Idol was more than just an entertainment show for me. It was a second chance at life.”

Cindy Swanson’s Interview with Scott MacIntyre

Cindy (a DJ for Christian radio station 101 QFL and a fellow iheartie) interviewed Scott MacIntyre and he talked about Idol, being a Christian and his album, amongst other things. Head over to her blog “Notes in the Key of Life” to listen to the interview.

The Season 8 top 10 included at least three or four people who were identified as Christians, including Scott.

But when asked about how having fellow Christians on the show made a difference, he points to third place finalist Danny Gokey.

“Danny… is the one person on the show that I very closely identify with. I know his faith is real, and it was a pleasure to be around someone like that, especially on tour.”

The Boot: Danny Gokey Urges ‘Idol’s to Take Control of Their ‘Best Days’

For every one ‘American Idol’ alum who finds success beyond the show, there are at least a dozen who fade out of the spotlight. Season 8’s third-place finalist, Danny Gokey, is one alum who’s made quite a name for himself post-’Idol,’ releasing his first country single, ‘My Best Days Are Ahead of Me,’ last month. He says contestants need to be more proactive about their musical fate.

“It’s being persistent,” Danny tells The Boot, when asked about the secret to success beyond ‘Idol.’ “When you’re on a platform that large, people will sit down and just wait for something to happen. Like, ‘I’ve been exposed to 30 million people, so I’ll just sit back and wait for the calls to come in.’ Many people don’t have an internal vision to go after something, fight for something, make a plan. So the biggest thing is — until you get picked up by a major label or until something breaks, you need to plan out what your dream is going to be.”

Danny’s debut country album, titled ‘My Best Days,’ is due for release on March 2. The singer hopes fans will feel like they’re on a “journey” with him, as they listen to the project from start to finish. “When I sing songs, I love to put emotion into it,” he says. “I want people to feel what I feel and just disappear for a moment.”

Danny already has a huge fan base, thanks to ‘American Idol’ and the tour on which he and his fellow Season 8 finalists embarked after the show. He’s no doubt grateful for his following, though he admits some fans go a little overboard.

“I had underwear thrown on stage that said ‘Gokey’ on the back … all glittery! It was grandma-underwear, too,” Danny says with a laugh, and then turns to a fan story that’s not quite so funny: “And I had this lady who was married who would come to a lot of the shows. She told me her husband would get mad that she was coming to all these shows, because she thought I was cute. She’d get backstage all the time — I don’t know how. I finally had to tell her, ‘I have no interest in you … and no interest in breaking up a marriage!’ It was so uncomfortable.”

American Idol: Danny Gokey’s Busy Schedule

Nothing that we don’t already know but I thought I’d post…

Season 8’s second runner-up, Danny Gokey, is showing no signs of slowing down as 2009 wraps up. The country crooner kicks off his week of radio station visits on Wednesday, but first he is performing a show tonight. For just $10, fans can see Danny at the City Limits Saloon in Raleigh, North Carolina at 9:30 PM on December 4, 2009.

Danny’s country radio station visits are as follows:

12/9: WXTU in Philadelphia, PA at 9:00 AM
12/9: WMZQ in Washington DC at 2:00 PM
12/10: WDSY in Pittsburgh, PA at 10:00 AM
12/10: WOGI in Pittsburgh, PA at 1:00 PM
12/10: WQMX in Akron, OH at 4:30 PM
12/11: WGAR in Cleveland, OH at 8:00 AM

Meanwhile, Danny is working on his anticipated debut album and will be promoting his latest single, “My Best Days Are Ahead of Me” on the radio. The digital single for this track will become available on December 22, just in time for Christmas. Danny talked about the meaning of his new single and said, “I love this song for what it stands for. I don’t live in the past. I live in the ‘now’…in the future…and in the dreams that I have. I know that my best days really are ahead of me.” His full album is scheduled to release early next year.
