I was woefully unprepared for the concert. I never had time to get a T-shirt printed as planned. (It would have said “Danny, you had me at the first growl” on one side and “Go Go Gokey Growl!” on the other.) I had no sign for Danny. I had no gift for Danny. I bought a new digital camera right before the trip. (I had no experience with digital; had only used a 35 mm SLR before.) I had no photos of Danny for him to sign, and no idea how to get any. I assumed they would be sold during the concert, which would be too late for the meet & greet. But, at least I knew that there was such a thing as a meet & greet and that it usually occurred in the afternoon, before the concert. I would have been clueless as usual but for the experiences that iheartDG members shared on this site.

The night before the concert, I insisted on going to my friend’s house. (I was staying at her mother’s house.) I was dying to check in with my iheart pals. Karen and Stephanie had agreed to tweet Danny to be on the lookout for me — Ellen from iheart. I told them what I would be wearing — a purple T-shirt with the legend “Club Fed — United States Court of Appeals, 8th Circuit” in green lettering. Frankly, I’m not sure what they actually tweeted. They could not tweet Danny my actual location because I was not (and still am not) on twitter. Anyway, back at my friend’s house, I jumped on the computer and desperately asked advice on how to get photos of Danny. The iheart gang suggested doing a photobucket search and printing something from there. Fortunately for me, my friends have a photo printer and had photo paper. (At home I only have a laser printer. It doesn’t do anything else.) It was getting late and I was tired and too impatient to scroll through very many Danny pictures. (And there were reams of them!) I picked the first one I liked — a picture of Danny singing “Dream On.” (Love that purple shirt!) My friend’s husband printed it for me as a 5″x7″ with lots of white space off to the side. Next, as an experiment, we printed two 5″x7″ pictures side by side — the one of Danny that is on the iheart site, where he is not wearing glasses and his head is tilted to the side, and one of Danny in a suit. (Man, can he wear a suit!) Finally, it was time to print a photo for Carole. I wanted an 8″x10″ for her. I ended up going with the same picture as one of the 5″x7″ twins — the one of Danny without glasses that is on the iheart site. I stopped at that point because I realized I was using a lot of my friends’ printer ink. The next challenge was to keep the photos separated and get them to dry.

The photos still were not completely dry on the day of the concert, so I stuffed them between individual pages of a legal pad. I arrived at Wachovia Arena at 1:00 p.m. The parking attendant was so sweet! He asked if I was there for the concert, and I explained that I was going to return later that evening with friends who had a reserved parking pass. Then he volunteered the information that there was going to be an autograph-signing session at 2:00 p.m. He also told me that there was going to be a backstage event later in the afternoon, around 4:00 p.m., but that you needed tickets for that. I rolled my eyes and said I didn’t rate. The attendant showed me where to go to wait for the meet and greet, and directed me to the $5.00 parking lot. When I arrived at the appointed place, I realized that I had left my water in the rental car. Because the meet & greet area wasn’t very crowded, I decided to trudge back to the car to retrieve my water bottle. Big mistake! (But I didn’t realize that yet!)

On the way back to the waiting area (seems pretentious to call it the barricades — too small), I met another fan, Dee from Wayne, New Jersey. She turned out to be an 60-ish Adam Lambert fan. She had been to the concert in Newark and was in Wilkes-Barre for a return engagement. She had driven down that morning and had decided to scope out the arena before checking into her hotel, which was nearby. She had not known about the meet & greet, but learned about it from the parking attendant. Dee and I stood near each other and chatted. Dee told me that Adam reminds her in some ways of Elvis, whom she had seen in concert.

There wasn’t a huge crowd, but there were plenty of folks waiting patiently. The crowd was very well-behaved. It was obvious, though, that it was mostly an Adam crowd. The weather was warm and pleasant, not hot. The sun was mostly hiding. At one point it got a little muggy, and at one point it looked like it might drizzle, but overall, the weather was very kind to the fans. Two cute young cousins — male and female — waited near us. The boy (David?) had a gift for Megan Joy Corkrey. The girl was an Adam fan. Amidst the crowd there was an umbrella with Megan’s name on it, a sign for Kris, and a sign for Adam that said, “Lambert’s Little Ladies.” Very cute! But no sign for Danny! I was starting to worry that I was the only Danny fan there! But then I started noticing swathes of purple (Danny’s tour color) throughout the crowd . . .

At 2:00 p.m., we saw the buses arrive. The driver of the third bus tooted his horn at the waiting fans. At least we knew that the Idols were finally here! But after that, well . . .
Time passed, very s-l-o-w-l-y. I drank my water, and lived to regret it. Nature called, but there are no bathrooms outside the arena. And who was gonna take the chance of missing the action to take a whiz, anyway?

The crowd just kept chatting away. The Adam fans were hoping that, because the crowd was small and well-behaved, Adam would come out. For their sakes, I hoped so too. It really was a very pleasant group of people. Everyone was supportive and respectful of each other, no matter which Idol was their favorite. Kristin, who stood near us, had won her tickets to the concert in a contest. Three o’clock came and went. At one point a security guard came out to get Kristin and take her into the arena to be with her mother, who had felt faint and dizzy and was resting inside. At another point, a print reporter started interviewing some of the fans in the crowd. An Adam fan with a southern accent — I think she was from North Carolina — regaled the crowd with her tale of meeting Adam after an earlier concert. She told the crowd that Adam never came out in the afternoon (which totally bummed the fans) but that they were more likely to have luck if they waited at the barricades after the concert. Adam had been very kind to her daughter, who was about six or seven.

Okay, time to twiddle the thumbs! At one point the crowd spotted Scott MacIntyre, and whoever was with him assisting him, walk past the fans to the doors of the arena. I only saw him out of the corner of my eye. I thought it was a bit odd that he would choose to use this entrance, walking past the crowd. (Definitely not a very security conscious move!) Not sure where Scott was coming from or where he had been, to use this entrance. The waiting began to wear on folks. By this time, the crowd would break into applause and cheer anytime anyone (usually the security guards) showed their face. No one got irate, but people did start verbalizing out loud what was on everyone’s mind: Why don’t they tell us something? Why don’t they let us know whether any Idols plan to come out? A few folks did give up the ghost. But I remembered the adage of my iheart friends: never, never leave! Other than really needing a potty break, I felt energized being in the company of fellow fans. To pass the time, Dee took a picture of me holding the twin Danny photos. And Dee’s purse elicited a lot of admiration and envy from fellow Adam fans. It was a handmade fabric purse that announced, firmly but tastefully, that Dee is a diehard Adam fan.

Aside from Dee, the other fan that I bonded with was Rachel from Gettysburg, PA. Rachel was the only other person near me who was wearing purple. We quickly identified ourselves to each other as Danny fans. Rachel had attended the concert at Reading the day before and drove up to Wilkes-Barre for the meet & greet in the hope of meeting Danny again! She gave us the poop on the Reading concert. Danny was great, and she got to meet him. (For some reason I think it was after the Reading concert, not at the meet & greet.) Rachel said that Matt Giraud and Michael Sarver reportedly had been under the weather. She also observed that Megan’s performance on stage was “painful to watch.” I told Rachel that some friends were going to tweet Danny to be on the lookout for me. Rachel was skeptical that Danny would see the tweets, given the volume of tweets he receives. But I was firm in my belief that Danny would see the tweets. I explained that I thought Danny would recognize the tweeters because they were from iheartDG and had successfully tweeted him before at other concerts to let him know about the presence of fans from the iheart site. The proof was in the pudding — or, more accurately, in the DMs that Danny sent Stephanie when he was unable to come out at the Tampa meet & greet. Rachel mentioned that she was aware of the iheartDG site, and has lurked there. RACHEL, IF YOU ARE READING THIS, COME JOIN US IN THE DISCUSSION THREADS!

If you will bear with me, I need to backtrack a bit at this point. I never, for a single moment, doubted that I would meet Danny. Anyone who knows me would recognize how out of the ordinary that confidence was. I am the original “the glass is half-empty” girl. My motto is whatever can go wrong, will. (And did! I missed my original flight from Portland!) I can certainly supply rational reasons for my confidence. Danny had a proven track record of meeting fans — he only missed a few venues. And I had guessed, accurately, that because the concert was being held in a small city — and one that is not especially supportive of the performing arts, to boot — the crowd was not large, nor was the physical setup of the arena so massive that fans would run the risk of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. (Of course, it helped that the friendly parking attendant had told me exactly where to wait.) But in truth, my confidence transcended rationality. I just knew that it was meant to be.

Well, back to the waiting game. I had used my TracPhone several times (which got lousy reception in Wyoming Valley, thank you kindly) to keep my friend apprised of the situation: I had arrived; there was supposed to be an autograph-signing session; none of the Idols had come out yet. My friend had explained that she could not come with me to the meet & greet because she had to work. So imagine my surprise when, a little after 4:00 p.m. or so, I heard someone call my name. My friend had come straight to the arena after work! I introduced her to Dee and Rachel. We all huddled together in a circle, exchanging stories. Apparently I must have looked pretty excited, because my friend gestured to me, and said, “Look at her! She’s glowing!” I admit it — I did feel a bit like a kid waiting her turn in line for a visit with Santa. Too bad my friend didn’t take my picture then, when I was relaxed and unselfconscious. I am not photogenic, and, perhaps for that reason, I tend to freeze up when a camera is pointed in my direction (which of course, doesn’t help).

Perhaps it was coincidence, or perhaps my friend brought good luck with her, but about five minutes after she arrived on the scene, the first American Idol came strutting out — Matt Giraud! And I do mean strut! Matt walked with a slow, exaggerated swagger that screamed confidence oozing out of every pore. Some of that confidence may have been facade; some of it was clearly real. I found it interesting, given that Matt had been accused (or so I’d heard) of not having enough confidence on American Idol. I would hazard a guess that Matt had really come into his own on the tour, much the way Danny did. And if Matt had been under the weather the day before, as Rachel reported, he certainly was in pink of health today!

Matt worked his way through the crowd, starting at the far right. Then he got to me! I felt terrible. I had no sign or gift for Matt, and no photo for him to sign. And not only was I obviously wearing Danny’s tour color, but I didn’t even know what Matt’s tour color was. (Still don’t!) For wont of a better idea, I thrust my legal pad — (in which I had Danny’s photos wrapped up) — at Matt, and he signed his name. Just “Matt,” in a bold, black, tall script. As Matt was about to move on, I scrambled for a way to let him know that I wasn’t just a celebrity slut after any Idol’s autograph, but instead a genuine fan. I finally latched onto the truth — I told him how much I enjoyed his version of the song “Human Nature.” And Matt burst into song, à capella! Sounded great, too! He really has a lovely voice! (But of course, he’s not Danny!)

Matt had been out for a while by now and had worked his way to the far left end of the crowd. The crowd started querying whether any other Idols would emerge. Then — Danny Gokey appears! To quote Gokeyguy, “YAY! DANNY!” Like Matt before him, Danny struts over to the crowd, but his swagger is dialed back a notch — a little less over-the-top, a little more real. Also like Matt, Danny starts out at the far right. But Matt soon interrupts to call Danny over to his end of the fence. Apparently there are Manny fans in the crowd who want to take a picture of their Idols! Matt and Danny pose together. I manage to sneak in a photo of Manny’s backsides. And Dee got a great closeup of the faces of Manny. Jen used my photo of Manny’s backsides in her video, “Manny — The Ultimate Bromance.” It’s the one where Matt is holding a silver gift bag that a fan gave him. But Jen didn’t use Dee’s photo. Too bad!

I’ve got to comment at this point, that anyone who was there would recognize that the bromance between Matt and Danny is bona fide. They know each other well. This wasn’t just one Idol calling over a fellow Idol. Matt and Danny communicate in shorthand — bromance manspeak. You don’t get that simpatico kind of “in sync” feeling unless there is a genuine connection. And Matt and Danny have it.

After spending a bit of time at Matt’s end of the line, Danny returned to his starting point. I was besides myself with excitement! But I also got a little discombobulated. I remember someone at iheart saying that Danny had a system — he signed autographs first, then posed for photos with fans. But Danny did not seem to be sticking to that system here in Wilkes-Barre — possibly because the venue is small and the crowd not overly large. Soon enough he reached the center of the line, where I was waiting. I’m not exactly sure if I surged forward, or what. It wasn’t especially crowded, but I think someone had been standing in front of me. It may be that Dee stepped aside to give me room, given that she was an Adam fan and knew I was a Danny fan. I’ll never know for sure, because my meeting with Danny was such a blur! I became un-shy in a heartbeat! Immediately I introduced myself to Danny as Ellen from iheartDG and pointed to my purple shirt. Danny recognized the name. “I think I got some tweets that you were going to be here.” Does it get any better than that?

We moved on to the autograph-signing part of our meeting. You can see most of that on a video that my friend took, unbeknownst to me. (The video clip is posted somewhere on the iheart site.) First I had Danny sign the “Dream On” photo for myself, to get that out of the way. Then I explained to Danny that he had a fan in the United Kingdom, Carole, and that I wanted to get his autograph so that I could mail it to her. Actually, I’m not entirely sure of exactly what I said. I know I mentioned “Carole” and “U.K. fan,” but my memory of the conversation is muddy and indistinct. At that point it felt as if Danny and I (like Manny beforehand) also were communicating in shorthand. Danny picked up on the unspoken but evident, without my having to say anything: Carole obviously had no opportunity to attend a concert or meet Danny in person, given her domicile in the U.K. Although I hadn’t bothered to ask Danny to sign my name on the “Dream On” photo, I did want him to sign Carole’s name, because I knew she would be tickled pink. Somehow, without my saying a word, Danny knew what I wanted. It was a momentary mind meld.

Danny put pen to photo, and asked: “Here. How about Carole? How about Carole?”

Ellen: “Oh, she is going to be so happy!”

Danny: “No worries! Is there another one, or is that it?”

My friend: “There’s another one, now she’s got another one.”

Danny: “Absolutely. I’ll sign whatever you want me to sign. Sign two — both of them?”

Ellen: “Oh, just — It doesn’t matter, whatever.”

Danny: “[I did both] in case you want to cut it up and give one away.”

My friend: “Thank you.”

Danny: “Thank you.”

Watching the video is surreal for me, because I distinctly remember having to explain to Danny how to spell Carole’s name, and Danny confirming, “Carole with an ‘e’?” Yet there appears to be nothing on the video clip about that. I can only surmise that I spotted the misspelling afterwards and had Danny correct it. I think Carole can vouch for the fact that the “e” looks separate, like it was tacked on later to the end of “Carol.” Right, Carole? Also, I didn’t ask Danny to sign the twin photos with anyone’s name, because I wasn’t sure who was going to get those photos. I thought maybe Karen needed a photo, but because I wasn’t sure, I thought it best to just get Danny’s signature. More bad planning on my part! If I’d gotten my ducks in a row before I flew to Wilkes-Barre, I could have had those photos personalized with the recipients’ names. Sigh!

Oh, can I rhapsodize over Danny’s signature now? “D J Gokey” in big, bold, luscious script. Curlicues on the tail end of the “J,” all over the “G,” and finishing off the “y” with a flourish. And legible too, to boot! Really! Do the Idols take a celebrity autograph-signature penmanship class, or what? I know I could never sign my name that fast, and have it look that good!

Sorry for the detour. That was not the end! Now it’s picture time! As I said, I’m never quite with the program when it comes to photos — always looking in the wrong direction, and so forth. Today was no exception. Okay, okay. I’ll get on with it! So Danny and I have our arms wrapped around each other’s shoulders, and . . . Well, Danny was sweaty! As I mentioned earlier, the weather was pleasant, not hot. I’m not sure what Danny was doing before he came out. I think they might have been doing sound checks on the stage. But for whatever reason, Danny’s T-shirt was slightly damp. Gokeyguy once asked about women’s reactions to sweaty males, and I said something along the line of, “There’s sweat, and there’s sweat.” That is, not all sweaty males are equally attractive (or unattractive) — it depends on the man. And I was right! There was nothing unattractive about Danny, sweaty or not. His shirt was slightly damp, but not clammy or disgusting. Quite the contrary! I wish I could tell you I took in a good whiff of our Dannyboy, but I was distracted, because . . . My friend could not get my camera to work! I’d been taking pictures of Matt earlier, and had the zoom feature on, and my friend, being so close, could not fit us into the picture. I wish my friend had told me what the problem was, though (i.e., that she couldn’t fit us in), because I could have explained which button to use to turn off the zoom. So there we are, Danny and me, arms wrapped around each other, and I’m getting increasingly anxious. Danny, of course, is completely patient and unfazed. Dum dee dee dum! While waiting for my friend to take a picture, Dee apparently decided to try to take a few with her camera. I don’t know whether Dee asked us to look towards her, or whether Danny just spotted her aiming her camera, but in Dee’s photos, Danny is looking right at her and I’m looking at my friend! How typical of me! (I hadn’t even known Dee had taken any photos until she sent them to me afterwards.) Okay, so now I’m about to spazz out and lose it. “Just take the darn picture already!” Finally, my friend took a picture! But then she said, “I think you blinked your eyes.” Arghh! So take another one! She did. (I hadn’t actually blink in either of my friend’s photos, but I did in one of Dee’s.)

Just as Danny was ready to move to the next person, I told him that I had travelled 3,000 miles from Oregon to see him. Danny seemed surprised. “Wow!” Danny stepped back for a second, leaned in towards me, and said something to me. It is a tribute to my total meltdown that I cannot, for the life of me, remember exactly what he said. It’s such a blur. I think Danny said something along the lines of, “You fans are the greatest. You are the ones who have put us where we are today.”

Rachel from Gettysburg was next in line. Rachel asked Danny if he remembered meeting her last night, and he said that he did. She asked him to sign her iPhone. (She’d experimented earlier with a special pen to see whether a signature would show up against the dark background of the iPhone. It did!) Rachel also gave Danny a special postcard she made, with a composite of Danny photos on the front, and her signature on the back. She told Danny, “This time I’m giving you my autograph!” As Danny moved on to Kristen, Rachel sighed dreamily, “Danny smells so good!” (Of course, I hadn’t noticed — was too busy spazzing out!)

Danny moved on yet again, down the line. At one point it looked like Danny was speaking briefly over a phone to a fan, but I’m not sure. It could have been Danny’s phone. In fairness to myself, part of the reason I was in meltdown mode was because I was very aware of how late it was getting. I knew that there was going to be an event with backstage passes that afternoon — (thank you, Mr. Parking Attendant, for that info!) — and it was getting late. The Idols did not come out to the meet and greet until 4:15 p.m., and the backstage event had been scheduled for 4:00 p.m. I wasn’t sure whether it had taken place yet or not. And the concert was just a few short hours away. So I didn’t want to monopolize Danny. I think, despite everything, that Danny got to spend a fair amount of time at every corner of the U-shaped barricade. I didn’t time how long Danny was out there, but it didn’t feel rushed. Danny is so patient!

Finally, Danny went back inside the arena. (Matt had already gone in a while back.) A big chunk of the fans pealed off and left. My friend left. And Dee left, because standing was getting painful for her, and she wanted to check into her hotel and rest before the concert. But the rest of us remained, hoping for another Idol sighting. At one point, the crowd started chanting, “Adam, Adam, we want Adam.” But even with the chanting, the crowd was very restrained. I don’t know why I stayed longer. I guess I was hoping that Michael Sarver would come out. But when my friend left, that was the end of the Idols. She came, they came; she went, they went.

And eventually I went! I had to get back to my friend’s mother’s house. My friend lives in a rural area of Dallas, and her mother in West Wyoming, both on the west side of the Susquehanna River. (Wilkes-Barre is on the east side.) The plan was to meet in West Wyoming and take one car to the concert, because my friend had a reserved parking pass. As I was exiting the arena, the parking attendant noticed me and remembered me from earlier. He gave me my $5.00 back! He said because I wasn’t using the lot to park for the concert, there was no charge!

Okay, so guess what happened next? Yup, you got it! I got lost! Again, in fairness to myself, I have to point out that the cross-valley expressway had not yet been built when I moved away from home many, many years ago. And who would think that you needed to take the exit for Wilkes-Barre (which is on the east side of the river), to get to the west side? Well, I knew something was wrong when I saw signs for the airport! Although I realized pretty quickly that I’d made a mistake, it took a while to get to the first exit where I could get off the highway. By now I’m dying. It’s late, I’m lost, I need to get to West Wyoming, and I really, really need to go to the bathroom! I get off the first exit and head for the nearest gas station. I told the station attendant that I was lost and would need directions, and also asked where the bathroom was. As it turned out, someone was using the bathroom. (Of course! Murphy’s Law, and all that!) So I went back to the station attendant for directions, because I really wasn’t sure I could just backtrack without getting lost again.) The attendant didn’t seem particularly interested in my plight. “I’ve got to get to West Wyoming! I’m meeting friends to go to the Idols concert!” (Which by the way, I’m thinking, starts in, like an hour from now!) A twenty-something woman nearby asked, “Did you say West Wyoming? I’m going there right now!” “Yes,” I responded, “West Wyoming. Can you give me directions?” The woman did better than that. She said, “I can take you there! Just follow my car.” So I did. (So maybe, just maybe, Murphy’s Law did not prevail!) I have no idea where the woman took me; we drove all through the back roads of the valley. But eventually I spotted the Eighth Street bridge, and knew where I was. At Wyoming Avenue (a main arterial), I waved goodbye, as she was turning but I was still going straight. I arrived at my friend’s mother’s house with just enough time to hit the potty and change clothes. And then we zoomed off to the concert.

And the moral of the story is? There were no fan wars in Wilkes-Barre. Everyone was very respectful of each other and cooperative. And the charm of small-town Pennsylvania was on full display. It has a lot to offer. Like friendly people who go out of their way to be helpful.

Where’d our “American Idol” summer go?

Sun-drenched days outside and scorching night performances from Season Eight’s best have given way to shorter, mostly cooler days.

But not so fast. Join me in one last, up-close savoring of a flaming 50-city fare served up by the show’s most recent Top 10 finalists.

Thick with back story and Michael McDonald-like timbre, Danny Gokey showed plenty of vocal chops and versatility with Michael Jackson’s “P.Y.T.” and Santana’s “Maria Maria,” but it was the Midwesterner’s passion and message that left its greatest mark. No longer could accusers deem Gokey as a footloose, loafing goof Hicks 2.0; his sweat-laced narrative to the congregation “you can do anything…don’t let adversity get in your way” segue into Rascal Flatts’ “My Wish” was not only a sincere and compelling ode to his departed wife, but to living each day with gusto–and the Lord’s help.
