    Morning!

Hopefully I will be the first one to post today. So excited to have seen so many recaps and videos from Danny’s concert. He is great in those videos. And I especially like Marilyn’s Recap,I even think it should be filmed under the name “Finding Danny”.Megan’s story is so touching. All the danny’s stories and experiences are just amazing. It’s all about love and faith.I guess that’s exactly what Danny wanna his music to do with people. It’s not all about entertainment but Inspiration.

Thank you all for sharing all the recaps and videos. You guys are the best.

    Hi everyone. :)

Danny ended up being #32 on the published chart up 51 spins for the week.

  5. FanOfGoodSingers on Mon, 8th Mar 2010 7:48 am

Also Danny is now #30 on the 7 Day Rolling Chart up 243 spins for the week. :)

  6. Lizzy on Mon, 8th Mar 2010 7:49 am

    FOGS,

I am trying to figure out how Danny’s single jumped to #30 and is up 243 spins on mediabase (Was at #32 up 50+ yesterday). How did that happen overnight? I’m not complaining – I am delighted but a little confused. That surely means MBDAAOM will be in the top 30 on Billboard this week. YAY!!!!!

  7. FanOfGoodSingers on Mon, 8th Mar 2010 8:00 am

    Lizzy

I definitely think that the countdown shows helped Danny out a lot. Wasn’t he up like 150 something spins last week after the countdowns shows that aired on Sunday. Maybe this jump is because of the countdown shows and maybe some of the stations were playing his song more yesterday.

  10. Lizzy on Mon, 8th Mar 2010 8:17 am

Aren’t there more countdown shows for the top 30. Looks like his song could break into top 30 soon.

Also glad to see his album is holding at #2 on the Itunes overall chart and #1 on the country. His single dropped to the 30’s on the Itunes overall chart but is still #3 on the country songs charts.

Estimates from HDD on his album sales sould be rolling in later this afternoon although we will only get the top 50% today but that should give us a very good idea where he is going to place on Billboard for album sales.

Danny’s single was on the regular countdown show played here (one Kix Brooks hosts, as #40) yesterday, and also I heard MBD played on the Crook & Chase top 30 show as a bonus with their interview that was posted here last week from their website. If Danny’s single continues to move up, soon maybe he will hold a place on the C&C show due to his ranking :)

The countdowns should have helped (through Saturday, as DaniP said the reporting is Sunday-Saturday?), but I do hope Danny is also getting more airplay just from the AI and CRS2010 exposure, and as an effect from earning his way into the gradual rise up in the charts.

Did any songs go recurrent, or does not happen until today? I still see Toby Keith who’s been dropping a fair amount.

I see Danny has moved ahead of Gretchen and Lee Ann Womack. Danny has some tough competition coming up though, as Miranda Lambert and Jason Aldean have new songs moving up. And Toby has another one in the queue for when his current single falls off the chart.

  12. FanOfGoodSingers on Mon, 8th Mar 2010 8:30 am

I am glad that Danny is still holding onto the #2 album spot on Itunes as well. He’s slipped a little on Amazon, now he’s #6 up there and #3 on the country albums chart there.

And on the Barnes and Noble site, he went from being #4 to being #9, but he still has decent rankings on those site. Plus with the start of the new week and more new releases coming out this week, it makes sense that he wuold start to slip on some of the charts.

Haven’t been at iheart for most of the past week. It was so busy and there was so much excitement that it became too stressful for me. :(

I just heard Danny Gokey interviewing and then singing “Life on Ya” on US99.5 Chicago radio station. Who’d of thunk this would happen a week ago before he was added to the playlist last Monday?

    Happy Days! :)

I’ve been thinking of all you lucky Danny Fans who were able to see him over the weekend. I’m sure all of you had a great time. Will be going through all the news/recaps hopefully this week.

That’s in addition to the four non-monitored stations that added Danny’s song in the prior few days. Those were out of Kentucky, Mississippi, Indiana, and Connecticut.

    Couple of random thoughts…

Get Away has become my new favorite song. Hope they release it as a single, because it has those undeniable country elements that will cement his success.

Where was Def? Didn’t see him on the stage.

Sophia’s sister (sorry can’t recall her name) must be a lovely women. After all, Def has been beside Danny’s side on the road for a very long time. Have to say, I love to see him rocking it out with Danny on those videos. He surprised me, because to date, he has seemed real sedate. Good for him :-) .

Danny looks so adorable swiveling around in that chair during his pre-MOA show interview.

    The pants. Enough said. ;-)

Hi everyone. The interview on 99.5 was great! Danny sounded amazing on both songs! His voice is a bit raspy – probably from all the back to back appearances. I felt bad when the radio station played an audio clip of when Danny said he wanted to do a mix of soul with a latin flavor. Danny tried to cut them off, but they insisted. Our Danny pulled a mini tantrum! :) He refused to listen to it and said he was going to take off his headphones!!! I think he should just embrace the fact that he could have chosen any genre based on his vocal abilites, but chose country because it was all around the best fit. He does seem uncomfortable with the idea of people criticizing him for having previously talked about doing soul/latin and then choosing country. But I honestly think he has no reason to shy away from talking about it. He should just talk about how his voice is well suited for a number of genres and his choice of country is based on a number of factors, including the ability to intertwine stories, music, inspiration and a cause.

Bosman; It wasn’t too bad; he sounded a little hoarse on the high notes. But IWNSGB was absolutely superb before that; I have never heard him sound so good on that song.

My request to Danny would be to drop WHTM from his concert lineup and add Like Thats A Bad Thing.
WHTM is a cover and he sings it great; but I think one cover is enough (I’d prefer Back At One) and I don’t like too much audience participation; I”m there to hear Danny not fans sing :)
At Milgokey it was kinda annoying to hear people singing so loudly on other songs too, like MBDAAM. I know they are just having fun.
Also concerts are high energy and I think Like Thats A Bad Thing would be great.

  38. Maryann on Mon, 8th Mar 2010 10:20 am

Yeah, Cheryl that was surprising Danny was so sensitive about that; he’s been pretty open about it before- Maybe it was because he was back in the Midwest and he always feels so comfortable here, so they were goofing around. It will be interesting to watch the video footage of that.

  41. FanOfGoodSingers on Mon, 8th Mar 2010 10:25 am

    Guys,
If you can ’stomach it’, I think a bunch of us should drop a an occasional thank you into our comments at MJs. I am saying this (gulp), because I think her posting of those videos is helping some more casual AI fans to see just how good Danny has become, and is exposing them to his new album, which they otherwise would have never given a chance. In a way (thanks to those of you that are ’spoonfeeding’ her the goods), she and you are responsible to increase Danny’s sales.

FOGS, DAnny was fine; he was having a “joking tantrum” and he apologized at the end. The DJs said “No one will give you a hard time for it up here”, and Danny said something like “Oh yes, they will”. So he is acutely aware of the criticism. He handled it fine; although I thought he protested a little too much and should have just let them play it; after all it was only the clip where he said he wanted to do R&B with a latin flavor. They did play it; he just kinda talked loudly over it.
It was all done in a joking manner though. I think he has to realize he is going to get asked about that!

But Danny is just Danny; we love that about him. He has his talking points its obvious; but he still just lets fly with what is really on his mind :)

Thanks for the info, pjgvet. :)

I am glad that Danny is okay. I think that if he gets asked that he should just be honest and say that he considered doing that style of music, but realized country music was a better fit for him and that he relates to the genre and a lot of artists in the genre. And that he was always drawn to that type of music on idol, and stuff like that.

If the “R&B with a latin flavor” comes up again, he should say that he IS incorporating elements of that into his music. Then he should ask THEM a question about how they think other genres have influenced country music. When someone tries to put you on the defensive, you just don’t let them do it.

  54. Maryann on Mon, 8th Mar 2010 10:42 am

    Totally random comment here…

If I had the opportunity to hear Danny sing any cover, I would love to hear him sing ‘All Summer Long’ by Kid Rock. He probably
wouldn’t do it, because of the lyrics, but I just love that song. Maybe, it is the Lynyrd Skynyrd influence. I don’t know. Just something wonderful about that song. Danny’s voice would kill it!

Good Morning All! I have to rush to work but today I am do to start work late leave early due to appts so I just want to quickly mention I had a super fantastic time over the weekend.
I just finished uploading all videos of all songs from the concert on YT search for tonicny go check them out although there are many out there to see. I have not accessed them to view them so I hope they uploaded correctly. I apologize since one song does not have the ending but because I combined some songs together and I was trying to stay under the 10 minute YT limit. On a few songs I did not start from the very beginning I was in the middle of the audience and my hands were not as steady. Please remember to rate and post comments on itunes I just did this AM and had absolutely no problems with rating and posting and there were some 1 star ratings on the front page so keep posting and get those messages out of the front page and raise the rating to 5 star. We have another memorable M&G with Danny that we will share with you all in our recaps. Lets show Danny the power of the ihearts what we can do as his fans, go on itunes, amazon and where ever else you can post and rate MBD and give it a 5 star rating. Jan and I also met Danny’s brother and we talked to him and his wife we did not take pictures of the two of them out of respect for their privacy but very friendly and down to earth just like Danny and I forgot to ask him if there will ever be a duet with him and Danny since I hear Charles is also a very talented singer, wouldn’t that be something to hear? OK I have to leave and rush out to work. Hope to spend some time this evening doing my recap and sending my pictures. I do not have any pictures of Danny on stage since I mainly focused on doing the videos of the songs but after the concert I went upstairs and took lots of pictures of when he was signing autographs from above. Unbelievable that he signed all the autographs and there is also a story on that too in regards to the security at Turner Hall which I will share in my recap.
Danny if you are lurking here when you start working on your second album it would be super if you did a duet with Charles. Bye for now. Toni

    Mr. Bing,

Make you think, doesn’t it? Life has dramatically changed for Danny in the course of the last two years. I cannot imagine being him. Enduring the stress and nonsense.Always having to be ‘On’ and ‘Looking Good’, watching his back, what he say, where he can go, who he can and cannot be seen with. It must be very hard. Not to mention, the lack of privacy and the evil paparazzi.

Given the apparent success of his album and his pending tour, things are surely to get rougher for Danny. Soon, he isn’t going to be able to go anywhere without being surrounded by security.

I hope and pray, this continues to be everything he wanted it to be for him.

Mr. Bing, you are right, there is definitely strategy involved. One Danny’s huge strengths is his sincere and warm persona. I think he disarms most people who interview him who like to take pokes at people, and they would wisely think twice if they don’t want to look like jerks. But of course, there are sometimes jerks to be dealt with.

    Morning Ihearts,

Tonic, I didn’t know that Charles could sing too. That would be great to hear the two of the sing together. They grew up singing together so it would probably be so much fun for them.

Mr. Bing Yes, I’ll bet it is tough doing all of those interviews.

Danny is great at interviews, but you can never predict when a DJ or reporter will pull something unexpected like that. It sounds like Danny did okay with it. But Danny’s music is soulful and who is to say that Danny won’t record a more latin sounding song in the future.

The problem is that my aunt and sister want 2 come now because of the video, but if that happens, they’ll have 2 pay some because I can’t afford all that. Would you guys just keep an eye out for me? Thanks. I promise a recap is coming. Sometime today.

Wonder why they are promoting this Jerrod guy as some hot new thing? Not liking it. What about Danny’s performance?

Nashville, TN – Hot new recording artist Jerrod Niemann is feeling the love at country radio as his Sea Gayle/Arista Nashville single, “Lover, Lover,” leads the pack as the most-added new song hitting country radio playlists this week.

POGS Pam explained Danny’s “tantrum” correctly. He and the DJ’s laughed about Danny not wanting to hear about what he had said before and they did tell him nobody cares what was said before. That nobody in their 20’s knows exactly what they are going to do etc… so, it was a light moment. But, I suspect Danny is aware of what the haters say about him going country. They imply he couldn’t go anywhere else so he went the country route. Danny knows that’s not true, so he should just comfortably say he had other choices, but chose country!

I have always got the impression that Danny was open to many genres and it truly was a learning experience for him. I believe he truly was surprised when Randy Travis suggested he could use his soulful voice in country and be accepted. Danny knows how soulful he is and probably never fully knew if country would accept him. He must have been pleased to hear Randy Travis say he could do country.

Still on the Danny country thing —- I do wish that Danny would in the future do collaborations with other musicians from other genres, like rock, pop, latin or soul. I think he should embrace the fact that he likes and respects those types of music and he should leave himself open to the possiblity of doing duets with other artists from other genres. I think Danny in some ways feels he has to defend his choice because it was unexpected and he is always getting asked “why country”. At some point he should be comfortable enough to say he would love to work with other artists from other genres.
Even Zac Brown during the CMA’s said he would like to do something with someone from hip hop (I forgot who is was that he talked with during the CMA’S).

WQMX, a monitored station in Akron OH just added.

Pam, maybe it seems that way just because there are more non-monitored stations, I’m not sure why there would be a difference otherwise, other than that perhaps the non-monitored stations which are smaller markets may be more influencable by listener requests and more open to new artists. It seems we regularly see complaints that the big stations just pretty much play the same few songs over and over.

  77. bosman on Mon, 8th Mar 2010 12:39 pm

    Pam, thanks for the clarifications.

Cheryl, you’ve given me some food for thought:

Well, although I have not followed new country music scene, prior to Danny’s announcement that he will thrust himself into this genre, I new what country sounded like.

But now with recent migrations in the US, an increasing push inland – into the heartland, from all three coasts and especially from the northeast to mid south east – the country music started to change rapidly.

I think that what Taylor Swift (castles, boys) started is just the beginning of this great change and that country music will serve as the backbone for the birth of new sub-genres. Country music will be the backbone because it is the most sold – perhaps it is not the most listened to or the most popular but definitely the most sold in recent times. Producers will jump on this new opportunity.

I suspect that there will be a lot of fusion attempts with country and new sub-genres like country rap and country with “latin” influences, country with techno influences — err… wait… that was tried already and did not take much root – Rednex. :) Or country with some other maybe foreign influences I cannot think of. So this country-latin fusion is exactly the place where Danny could experiment. Not with the whole album, but with a song or two. Or maybe not.

bosman, I think it would be a great experiment! I’m sure you know the great Johnny Cash song, Ring of Fire. It opens with Mexican mariachi horns – he said he heard it that way in a dream. I also think of the old classic ballad “El Paso”, which features what sounds like Spanish style guitar playing. Both of these songs were massive hits.

On the topic of the sound of country music, I think you might be interested in the editorial that Matt Bjorke posted this morning. He is talking about the same thing that I was writing about here not too long ago and that you’re talking about in your post, which is that country music is more than just a sound. He didn’t mention Danny specifically, but I talked about Danny in my comment.

We were discussing having some Iheart shirts made for us ihearts so when we attend the concerts Danny will recognize us. I’m doing a twitlonger about my whole weekend, but I want 2 brag a little bit on some people. I first of all want to thank Nancy for picking me up at the airport. Bless her heart, she got a parking ticket while we were eating. 60 dollars! I want to thank Pam, Val, and Karen for being such amazing company Friday night. I’m sorry ladies if I came across as sort of grumpy. I was exhausted!:) I want 2 brag on Pam a bit. She was so awesome! She had no issues with Whitney going in her car which was awesome! You don’t know how frustrating it can be when someone doesn’t want 2 take u somewhere because you have a dog. Pam also drove Deb and I home from the concert and took us for muchly needed ice cream! I also want to thank Kristy (she’s on twitter, but I can’t remember how 2 spell her username) for driving us to faith builders. It was an awesome service. She even drove us 2 the airport and walked me in. This weekend was amazing! I felt so loved and everybody was so very nice. I was amazed! Everyone just accepted me and loved me and Whitney. It was so awesome! Thank you guys. I should say thank you to more specific people, but I don’t want 2 leave anyone out. Everybody I met was awesome, and I’m so glad I had the chance to meet you guys, and I want 2 come back soon! Thank you guys so much for all you did!:)If I’ve left anyone out, I’m sorry. I could go on and on forever about you guys. I had such a good time. Having Danny sing 2 me was just the icing on the cake. The cake was meeting so many awesome fans, and I’m so glad that I was given the chance to do that.I’m going to post a twitlonger sometime today. I’ve got about 4 pages. I’m writing about the entire trip. This was Whitney’s and my first trip together by ourselves so it was a big deal anyway, so if u read it, I’m warning u now it’ll be long!

FOGS Are those the same as the numbers Brian Mansfield was talking about are they? If they are they would be well below the 75,000 to 100,000 he was predicting. If 36% of the numbers are in does that mean each of the artists is missing 64% of their numbers? If that is the case that would put Danny around 50,000 right? Or am I reading that wrong?

    Cheryl

I believe that it’s 36% of the reports from different places that sell Danny’s CD are in, not 36% of the sales. Right now Lifehouse who is predicted to sell around the same amount as Danny are #22 on the list with 11,011 albums that have reported to be sold so far.

If this was 36% of sales, then they would have only sold 33,000 albums, but I believe they will sell more albums than that. The 36.20% is the percentage of stores that have reported these artists sales.

I do think that Danny will sell less than 75,000 but I do think that he has a good chance selling in the 45,000-50,000 range that HDD predicted for him.

  124. Ellen B. on Mon, 8th Mar 2010 2:16 pm

I’m going to apologize in advance if I offend anybody here, but . . .

I have no idea what happened in that Chicago interview, but Danny does need to realize that he won’t always be able to stay on script. In fact, on the talk shows, he should throw the script away and be confident that he will be able to convey the gist of what he wants to say anyway.

I heard the interview in which Danny said he wanted to do soul with a Latin flavor. And I always cringe when I hear the Randy Travis story, because the conversation with Randy took place BEFORE that interview.

My guess is that Randy Travis (and Danny’s song selection on AI) planted the seed. I will speculate that when Danny looked into doing soul/Latin, he may have discovered that it wouldn’t be such a good fit in ways other than vocally. On AI, they do covers, and they can do some of the all-time great songs. But starting a music career in the here and now is different. Danny may have investigated contemporary soul/Latin, and found that he was not comfortable with the songs or his peers.

I think Danny needs to be more candid about how he decided on country. Vocally, Danny really could do a variety of genres. I think the question was where he would fit as a performer and where he would feel most comfortable (that would be country). My guess is that Danny is still concerned (rightfully, I think) about whether he will be accepted in country music. But I think he can and should be honest about how he decided on country. I don’t think it’s a negative (given the array of really competent performances Danny gave on AI in various genres) if country wasn’t the first thing that jumped out at him. I suspect that the evolution to country music was a gradual process.

But the interviews (I’m pretty sure there was more than one) in which Danny said that he intended to go in a musical direction other than country are out there. And the hate-tards and skeptics are going to continue to bring that up. I think that may even be why some hate-tards keep claiming that Danny dissed country music. They may be remembering Danny’s soul/Latin interviews and confusing them with the interview in which Michael Sarver said pretty explicitly that he wasn’t interested in doing country, which may be why they are convinced that Danny said he didn’t want to do country.

DANNY, where is your PR person? You can be honest without offending the country community.

FOGS thanks for the explanation! I sure hope Danny does close to 50,000. I did think that 75,000 – 100,000 was too hopeful and almost wish Brian Mansfield had not speculated that it was possible. 40,000-50,000 is an amazing number!

They normally don’t update more than like 53% of the reported sales on Mondays. We should have Danny’s full sales total tomorrow afternoon:

Ellen, I am not offended by what you said. But I do think that the things he has said have been honest, in that he was influenced by country music when he was young and he was influenced by Randy Travis. I think he has gotten across that it was kind of a journey for him to figure out what to do next.

But there is something that he only touches on that I wish he would expand on further. He says things like “I can be who I am in country music”. I think he needs to talk more about WHY that is. It goes to the discussion I was talking about earlier, about how country music is about both a sound and a set of values. I think he could talk more about how his sound might be on the cutting edge of country music, but his background and values are bedrock country, even though as I said on Matt Bjorke’s blog this morning, it all happened north of the Mason-Dixon line and without a southern accent. I want him to reinforce this more to help country listeners see him as “one of us”.

I like it that he is honest about going into AI not really knowing what he wanted to do next. I think he generally handles this issue pretty well, but I agree it would be helpful to expand on the key talking points.

Don’t worry Erika, I will do a list for you at the end of the day.

I’m not sure if I already mentioned WXTU, monitored in Philadelphia. So many today so far! 13, of which 6 are monitored. And about 1/3 of stations still need to report in.

Ellen You and I are on the exact same page about the country vs other genres of music issue. I recall that when the press release came out about Danny doing country, Joe Galante said “what matters is the record you put out not what you said before”. So I suspect that his record company is fully aware of what Danny was saying and probably coached him to not talk about what was said in the past. I thing he SHOULD talk about it and tell everyone how he ended up in country without trying to defend the decision. There is absolutely nothing to defend. We all know that instinctually Danny is a soulful singer and he has said his father listened to Motown, Country and Gospel. Danny does not need to deny those influences. I think the best artists are versatile and Danny should be able to talk freely about his experience of being soulful and discovering that country is a genre that allows him to keep that soulful sound without compromising the country sound.

To me Danny should take control of those conversations and be who he is, a guy influenced mostly by Gospel with exposure to Motown and Country searching for a good fit for his voice and goal of mixing message with music; then finally finding it in country when people like Randy Travis, the record company, producers made him aware that he would be able to be successful in country even though he may not have been fully aware of how good the fit could be.

    Hi Everyone

We have been gone about 3 weeks, and without a computer!!! I did get a chance to watch Danny on Idol, and thought he did great… Things just seem to get better and better. I have to tell you though, I have yet to hear his song on the Duluth station, and there were 5 copies of My Best Days at Wal Mart.

I see that Mighty is back and wondering if that could be the person calling themself Carla?

I come back to the same question about the Danny haters? Other than trying to destroy a guys reputation, and his stardom, why do the haters continue to listen to, tune into, and continue to follow Danny? I know if I do not like someone or there music, that is the last place I would go. Really sad to admit what some of the world has come to isn’t it?

I should clarify that I don’t think Danny has been dishonest, but I do think he could be more candid about the process by which he came to choose country. The interviews in which Danny said something other than country are out there. His fans know that as well as the naysayers. Why not just say (as I suspect was the case) that the decision was a gradual process, starting with the childhood influences of Wynnona Judd (sp?), his song choice on AI, Randy Travis, etc.?

Bosman I’m with you on the mixing of genres. I do think all genres of music are being more and more influenced by other genres. There has always been crossover, but it seems more. I’m not so sure that the purists of any genre are going to be the ones to win out anymore. Your example of Taylor Swift is a good one. She definately has appeal to both country and pop and I think 10-15 years ago this would not have been accepted as readily by country, nor by pop. Look at Lady Antebellum. They are not afraid to do crossover music and I think because of that, the other songs on their album that are more country will be listened to and bought by non-country folks.

I really hope Danny embraces the crossover appeal he has. He has always said he did not want to limit his music, so I think it can only help that he has crossover appeal. I don’t want him to feel that in order to make country purists happy he has to ignore his appeal to other fans.

Grandmaster As far as I’m concerned, the million dollar question is why do the haters listen to Danny’s music and talk about him so much? I have no interest in certain artists so I have no interest in listening to their music much less talk about their music or about them as people (especially hateful stuff). I may see one of these artists by pure accident on some tv program, and then perhaps I might say if I liked the song/performance. But, I have no interest in seeking out information about some artist I claim not to like. I just don’t get it!

If I were to constantly seek out information about an artist I claim to dislike, or go to blogs to write about them I would start questioning my own sanity. Or at least I would re-examine my true feelings about the artist and probably come to the conclusion that I really LIKE the artist and am only fooling myself and others!

Ellen; perhaps Sony has told Danny to just stick to his talking points and avoid talking about his original desire to do the soul/latin thing.
I agree though; he shouldn’t be embarrassed about the way he decided on country. Especially since th does it fabulously.

    - And another 120,000+ copies of Danny’s CD on order, yay.

Seems like he is having a great week already. (eat that, windmills & niall! lol. sorry)

Claudia, glad you enjoyed that. I thought it was pretty nice also ;)

Will be interested to check out any media from US99 on the mini-temper tantrum and WGN. I don’t think Danny has particularly hidden anything about his not initially thinking of country music. Have seen at least one interview where an interviewer was giving him a softball question that assumed that Danny had country in mind all along, and Danny pretty clearly contradicted them.
That’s different though than elaborating on whether Danny ever seriously pursued R&B or some other genre, or how early his contacts came with country labels. As far as I can remember, no one has ever really asked him that in a serious interview. Whether he’d answer, I dunno.
Somewhere here quite a long time ago had posted about being in LA for some reason and having conversations around the time of the AI finale or top 3 week, and hearing back that early that Sony was pursuing Danny. And Joe Galante said in some quote recently that they had their eye on Danny believing he would be a good fit for country, but that there was a question whether they could interest Danny in it.
I do remember pretty early on Danny talking about the “modern soul country” publicly, at least in June if not late May. And it was only a week or two in May that I remember hearing much about the R&B / Latin. That just got a lot more notoriety as it came in his exit interviews which were all over when he first left the shows, and the other interviews where he started to talk about soul country were less well-circulated.

    Danip,

I have been watching the HDD numbers since early afternoon but couldn’t post since I was at work (shouldn’t even been following the numbers but I couldn’t resist lol). Anyway, I do hope that Danny sells more than Easton Corbin because I want Danny to be the best selling new country male artist and I think RCA is hoping for that too to put in their press release. If these first numbers are from Walmart, then hopefully Danny will have sold more at Best Buy, Barnes and Noble, Amazon, Itunes, etc. I am hoping he is over 50,000 and comes in #3 in country and in the top 10 overall. Keeping fingers crossed that happens.

Can someone tell me what is going on with ordering more CD’s. I gathered that Danny DM’s someone about more CD’s coming.

I also would like to know who reports the CD’s sold from Danny’s official site and who provided the CD’s that were sold for admission at Danny’s concert. If it is RCA, do they provide sales numbers to Neilsen soundscan to count towards his first week sales. Anybody know???

Re: this what he said before vs what he is doing now discussion :

I think we need not worry about these kind if things. There are no rules about who can sing what genre of music no matter what the have done before. The market sorts out where the successes and failures come in, so no matter what Danny may have thoought before he was signed changes not one iota what My best Days is as an album and everyone who purchased did so because they liked what they heard not the label that was put on it.

I like Danny Gokey no matter what he sings!

He grew up in inner city Milwaukee public school and you may have noticed has a definite urban slang at times.

I actually find it unique and endearing. He is almost perfect to me in every way so I like his little imperfections.

Grandmaster, I was very taken aback by your comment at 3:01 pm – that you think I could be that hater, Mighty. You mentioned you just got back from vacation so maybe you didn’t see my first post on Sunday. I’ve been a lurker at iheart since last May and have enjoyed it so much; just never had the courage to post publicly until now.

As I mentioned earlier, I live in the Twin Cities and got to go hear Danny sing at the Mall of America Friday night. It was my first time to see and hear him live and I was so excited I wanted to come on this site and share it with all of you.

Rest assured, I am a very loyal fan and have the utmost respect for Danny in how he’s handled everything in the last year. He’s one of a kind and it’s beyond my imagination how anyone could not love him or be drawn to him. It’s not everyday we can say that it’s truly a joy to be someone’s fan…but it is with him!

I have been looking at this iTunes thing and maybe everyone else already knew this, but it caught my attention that the first page of reviews when I pull it up are actually several days old, and I realized that they must rank them by reviews that are rated “most helpful” rather than chronologically. I never really noticed that before.

Each review has the question “Was this review helpful?” . So I think it would help to go through them and click “Yes” for the really good ones and “No” for the bad ones.

Betty, My wife and I is the refection of RESPECT, me and my wife is the reflection of soulless, correct and yet quite disrespectful grammar. But that’s about sociolinguistics and we should not really get into that. (Sorry, I do not want to be preachy or anything, just presenting what I know)

One of reasons why I really like Danny so much is because of his train of thought, this open scream of consciousness that reverberates from deep within. That’s why he is able to sing with such an emotion.

Listening to that radio interview, I think that Danny was/is extremely frustrated because many stores are out of his CD. Everything points that the stores are grossly understocked. Danny was also ticked when the male host said “when the first week’s out I think they put 8 CDs in every store.”

This has put an awful dent in his first week’s sales. All that advantage built by the AI performance is lost because of understocked stores. Now I know why HDD did not change their prediction after his AI performance. It seems that there were not that many CDs out there available to be sold in the first place!

    I can only hope I am wrong…

Just ran across one that said “Danny should have won on American Idol, not Adam!!!!”. Ha!

Well, I’m about halfway through the reviews, and I would say that most people with two brain cells to rub together will recognize the hateful ones for what they are. They seem to appear in clumps, and the writing is very juvenile.

I’m not going to call them out because I know we have some unfriendly lurkers and it’s best that they remain as clueless as they already are. But I guess I feel better. It’s horrible that people give bad reviews out of jealousy, but if you’re going to have to get that, at least it’s good if they show themselves for what they are.

Josie, sounds like you’re on the case, but where is the Mr. Hammer you’re talking about?
    .

off-topic a little, but appears Kris Allen does indeed have a handful of dates where Keith Urban is appearing. I’m not sure I’d consider him to be “opening” for Keith per so though, isn’t Danny also appearing one day when Keith comes on later? and I suspect Danny would get a much bigger response from a country festival crowd than Kris.

    http://mjsbigblog.com/kris-allen-will-open-for-daughtry-keith-urban-on-selected-tour-dates.htm

funny to see all the State Fair dates for Kris. I don’t think there is anything wrong with that, some of those events are very big and a lot of top performers do them. But I can remember some kradison-oriented haters placing bets on how fast Danny would be singing at state fairs. lol.

Well, third time lucky? Lost 2 posts-very strange-and at midnight, my old, broken mobile phone, with no screen, suddenly lit up and played MBD- Spooky? Anyway, thanks to all for the videos, what a night that was at Turner Hall? Meaghan, once again, want to say how happy I am for you, an experience you will never forget, that will make you smile when you may be feeling a bit down-and Whitney, what a star- I love dogs and she is just amazing- Please let us have a LONG recap!! Don`t know how Danny`s voice is still sounding so good! At the risk of offending, there was something about the drums at the Concert, don`t know what, but seemed to be a bit overpowering at times-I guess we aren`t used to hearing percussion at Danny`s concerts-it`s totally different on a CD when it has been well produced- I haven`t heard all the songs in full, I am holding on until I get my CD, very soon! I am so happy with the sales figures – Glad the stores seem to be getting more copies on shelves- Tomorrow we will know! Just to remind anyone who doesn`t know, that there will be an article on Danny in a UK Country Music magazine, not sure when, but will let you know-This came as a complete surprise, I emailed them a long time ago-so, 5 radio stations and now a Magazine, and, hopefully, interviews-when he gets some spare time! The sky`s the limit now!

I just watched Danny’s breathtaking and heartbreaking performance of IWNSGB at WGN today and am stunned speechless. Bosman said it best–how that man does not fall apart completely while he sings from the depths of his heart like that is a mystery to me.

Lurking at the S8 thread at davidcookofficial.com. Danny was never a favorite over there (although not as hated as Adam), but he’s been getting a lot of love there and the discussion at the moment is centering on him and how well he is doing.

The following was posted by a David C/Kris fan, who doesn’t hate Danny but never seemed to care much about him before:

“Count me as one who would not be surprised if Danny Gokey turns out to be the biggest seller coming out of AI8—not his first week, but in the long haul. He is positioned in an area of country that I don’t personally enjoy—but that sells tons. And it sounds like his management is being very smart. He’s been doing a lot of work in the trenches at radio stations, and when the stations weren’t crazy about his first single, they quietly pulled it and put out a different one. And the pairing with Sugarland on tour is a strong one, not only because Sugarland sells tons of concert tix (although there is that) but also because Sugarland pulls in a lot of nontraditional country fans, which is the group least likely to be bothered by the fact that Danny does not come from a country background.

While Danny’s single is growing in strength on the country chart, there’s no guarantee that he’ll have the longer term radio success that he needs to make gold or better. And we’ll see what AL and Kris have up their sleeves for their follow-up singles. And maybe some folks will get on board the Allison Iraheta train. [I bought her CD as part of the itunes sale, and it really is a solid, enjoyable record.] But based on watching the rollouts and results to date, and knowing what I do about the country market, I think that Danny has a definite shot at being the top seller of this crew.”

The fact that so many people who are not Danny fans are predicting his great success now is extremely encouraging.

Josie, I hate those hater, immature reviews on the first page too. We should have gotten there first. But iTunes is odd; sometimes my reviews show up in the middle and not the last page right after I post them; strange.

Bosman, I’m with ya. I always liked the sound of “My husband and I ” more than “Me and my husband”, it sounds more polite.

I too, hope that the shortage of CDs hasn’t really affected sales. Now that Brian Mansfield has my hopes up about 75k; I will feel disappointed if he doesn’t sell at least 60k! Did he post articles like that for the others

When I pull up iTunes now, all the reviews on the first page are favorable. I see now that you can choose how they are sorted, it can be by Most Helpful/Favorable/Critical/Recent. The default must be Most Helpful, because I have never touched that. So I think that my suggestion earlier to go through and answer yes or no to the “Was this review helpful” question is in fact a useful thing to do. Assuming that most people leave it on the default Most Helpful, it will push down the nasty ones. Just adding a new review won’t, for the default anyway.

Regarding Danny “only” selling 19,000 at walmart–none of the Walmarts in beautiful Madison WI had Danny’s CD last week. Believe me I checked. I believe that not all of the Walmarts were shipped Danny’s CD. So I went to Shopko and bought my extra copies. With the other avenues to find the CD, I think Danny will exceed 75,000. But you all know that I am confident on Danny’s success. I also think Sony/RCA may want to build hype on people needing to find Danny’s CD–they don’t want crates of them sitting around. People want what others have and they can’t find…..That’s my theory, and I’m sticking to it until I’m proven wrong in the next post, LOL! Jan

  201. I AM G on Mon, 8th Mar 2010 8:15 pm

When Brian Mansfield made the prediction of 75K, I don’t think he was just being nice to Danny or was overly optimistic. He had to have some data that he was working off of.

And Brian Mansfield is not MJ or Rickey – in that he is considered a Nashville insider.

I would assume that 19E and RCA Nashville must be privy to some sales data. And I would assume that Danny has already surpassed a certain point.

And Brian’s article was really trying to make a case of why he didn’t think Danny’s first week sales would be 100K+.

FOGS, Steph, or anyone else who keeps track of these things–

Is there any chance, or has anyone heard of MBD being added to any non-country stations yet? I think he has a lot of crossover appeal, and non-country stations are now playing Lady Antebellum, which is more country sounding than Danny. Also I am curious if there is a possibility his video may be added to VH1’s playlist?

LOL, this is crazy!:) I’ll try to do the twitlonger again. Wow, so much information and story! I’m overwhelmed over hear. I hope Danny’s album does well. I think it will. It’s odd that they didn’t put out more albums than they did. I mean CDs. I’ve heard that it’s not the CDs that are sold necessarily but the amount of CDs that are shipped. For example, one could have sold 20000 CDs but if 40000 were shipped, they’d count that! I really don’t know.:) We’ll see. I don’t know how all that is counted. I have high hopes for Danny. To be honest, I don’t think Danny would be very happy highly famous. I think that he wants to be personable with all of his fans and if he got really huge, he wouldn’t be able to do that. Just my thoughts. I want him to be huge don’t get me wrong but…. I sort of….hmmm. Interesting.

The only AC or CCM stations I’ve heard playing Danny’s song, are where he was there for interviews at their request like the station near you.

  212. FanOfGoodSingers on Mon, 8th Mar 2010 8:26 pm

    Helio

I think that MBD has mostly been added to just country stations, I think that it might have gotten added by one AC station.

I don’t think that it’s going to be added to VH-1’s playlist anytime soon, I think that Danny would have to have a high ranking on the pop chart, where as far as I know he’s not ranked on in order to get played on that channel.

He would have to successfully crossover to pop like Lady Antebellum have before his video would get played on VH-1.

I find it really interesting that HDD has moved Danny from debuting “AT #5″ – to debuting “IN the top 5″.

    So Adam debuted #3, Kris #11, Allison #35 – on Billboard’s Top 200.

But if Danny debutes in the Top 5, either he or Adam will have the highest debut album from Season 8. If it is Adam, Danny will easily come in 2nd – over Kris and Allison.

Not sure how all this translates to sales, but it will still be a great milestone for Danny.

  215. Lizzy on Mon, 8th Mar 2010 8:29 pm

    Rowansmom,

I would be very surprised if Danny’s label pushed his current single or any other single to non-country stations at this time. They and Danny have worked extremely hard to gain Danny credibility with country radio. It would be a mistake in my opinion to risk that since country radio seems to be accepted him. I do believe they may try later but not in the near future.

Nice for Kris to get Keith Urban; thought still think its an odd pairing- although both are guitar guys. The Daughtry opener seems more up his alley. Strange they have that Vegas date listed; when I checked the web site it said he was taken off the bill. Huh.

So excited about top 5 debut-yahoo! I doubt he will beat Adam by debuting #2; he can’t touch Lady A or Sade I don’t think and there is that Alice album. And Blake. Hmmmm. I will guess #4 or #5.

We know that Lady A and Sade will be #1 and #2 and that Blake Shelton will probably be #3. I also think Almost Alice will be in the top 5. Keeping those fingers crossed.

    Thanks for the apology, Grandmaster!

I finally viewed the videos of Danny singing Crazy No To…and it just makes me melt! This song, as well as the others on his cd, are just so Danny. I love that he chose songs that seem to speak of where he’s at or where he’s been. Even Crazy Not To – I picture this is how it will be for him when he’s ready to love again: hesitant but unable to keep from falling in love.

I don’t know that Kris really is “opening” for Keith based on looking at Keith Urban’s schedule. Keith is appearing at a lot of state fairs and country music festivals this year. He doesn’t seem to be doing a package tour in the same way that we are seeing with Sugarland, where Keith would show up with a recurring cast of openers at arenas and other venues.

State fair may be a mixed format, but I have to wonder how Kris will do in large crowds like that. I’m not sure he has the persona or stage presence to carry it off in front of a general audience who aren’t necessarily there to see him.

If the format is one where country fans will have to attend Kris’s show to save a seat for Keith, I wonder how that will go over. Could be ok as country purists probably wouldn’t like Keith himself, but still would seem odd to me.

DaniP, lol :) You mean because I commented in a less than gaga manner about the Kris Allen “opening act” news for Keith Urban? ;)
I mean, maybe Kris Allen was picked by Keith Urban and his team to be out touring with him. But I kind of doubt it. Guess more news will emerge, but I’d feel pretty silly running around calling Danny the opening act for Keith Urban based on that Country Stampede event where Danny is booked with Keith & Darius.
And I doubt Darius would call himself Keith’s “opening act” when Darius is a fixture for Brad Paisley’s tour and just came off the Rascal Flatts tour.

It actually looked to me as if Keith is doing very limited touring. His website only showed one day or so a week.

And Kris wasn’t entirely gracious about doing that number with Keith Urban, actually. Not that he may not have had his reasons to object, but it would have been more tactful not to have made it as clear as he did publicly.

I’m sure that didn’t cause any big perturbance in Keith’s existence, but some fans of Keith may remember it.

    Hey everyone,

I’ve been multi-tasking, lurking and catching up on things but have to jump in here cuz my other fave Keith’s name keeps popping up. I’ll go on record as saying I do remember Kris commenting after his performance with Keith that, while Keith is a great guy and musician, Kris was definitely distancing himself from the comments that he should consider going country. I didn’t take it as a direct diss but it did irk me a bit the way he handled it. I haven’t really checked this tour date that they have together but if most of the fans are there to see Keith, they may be a bit disappointed with Kris Allen. KU puts on a very dynamic show and I don’t think KA is at that level. Although he could certainly learn a thing or three from KU.

Is Keith on a label that has a relationship with Jive? I see peeps at mj’s saying that Keith must have been so blown away by Kris on that duet, that he has sought him out to go touring with.

Seems quite unlikely to me, esp. as Kris isn’t country and has some reputation as an inconsistent tour performer in big venue situations especially. Does anyone have an idea how many tickets Kris has sold to any event on his own (in the US)?

That’s what I remember. Kris saying that he wasn’t best pleased to be paired with Keith as Kris doesn’t do country music.
He may not have said it outright, but it came across to me as if he didn’t particularly like country music, and was distancing himself from the idea of country music so people would not get the impression that would be Kris’s direction. N
In general, just not the most gracious things to say or hint publicly when he was asked to sing a duet with a big star like Keith.

Keith records with Capital-Nashville. I am not aware of any connection with Jive so that really would make no sense to pair them up for an extended tour of any sort. However, I will say that KU is VERY gracious and will probably extend a very warm welcome to seeing KA again. I would think this show would be a one hit one-der.

LOL, I don’t ever recall Keith Urban on record saying that he was so blown away with his duet with Kris on the finale. I highly doubt he personally hand-picked Kris to “tour with him”. But it is on record that both Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman said Danny was their favorite.

And it is also on record that Lionel Ritchie said on SIRIUS radio that Danny should not have only been in the Top 2, he should have won American Idol.

I agree, I don’t see these shows with Kris – in the same league as the tour Danny has with Sugarland.

I thought it was interesting that Danny said in today’s interview that he now knows when he’s “done” and has to go rest/hibernate. I think I’ve read that some interviews were surprised in the AI days when he seemed “flat” on an interview. I’m guessing those occur when he’s stretched beyond the capacity of a super extrovert like Danny. That takes some doing! Jan

I just have this image stuck in my head from having seen the AI tour show in Reading PA, and Kris was rather dull and large numbers of people were starting to leave by his second song :o

I’m not a Kris fan, but I’d hate to see him matched in something that wouldn’t really work for him, and would turn out to be a downer for Keith Urban and his fans. If Kris’s performance at a big, beer-guzzling state fair crowd the way I saw him on the AI tour, with a friendly AI crowd walking out on him, I’m not sure it’s out of the question he’d get booed.

We’ll see. Maybe Kris is a fixture with Keith for those state fair dates. Windmills seems to think Keith will have only one supporting act for them, which, if true, makes it even odder to me that he would have Kris. Kris has just one single that’s been on radio, and that’s top 40 radio, and has had relatively few albums sold for an AI winner. So which of Kris’s songs would Keith’s audience be expected to know if he does a full-length tour set?
    .

I see on twitter Danny’s Detroit concert had a great crowd apparently.

@dannygokey: AMAZING sold out show!!!! Detroit Michigan you rock!!! Sorry we ran out of CDs. Hope to see y’all soon.

TThis is what I posted at mj’s about it.

That’s pretty good, as the Detroit radio station sponsoring the event was advertising that the “first 500 people” would get copies of Danny’s CD. (Not sure how/if that counts in his sales, seems like an awful lotta CDs to just give away as pure freebies from RCA.)

It sounds to me like Keith Urban is doing limited touring right now, and for that reason may need to bring in a bunch of different performers to be the opening acts, as the other opening performers likely want to be on a full tour with someone else (well, they want to be on a full tour, not necessarily with someone else!), but could fill in on certain dates between their own tour schedule. So KU may be lining up a variety of opening acts to fill in.

This is just a hunch. I don’t know anything about country music or touring, so I could be wrong.

That recap at the OS was interesting. I’d only briefly looked at the page before posting the link here. Had no clue from first glance it was written by a male fan, but it tracks with the other reports I saw on twitter. The recap writer seems to say there were several hundred people there, which could well be from the videos I saw where the crowd seemed to be all over the store. They were covering a much bigger area of the store in Chicago than I saw in Virginia, where I’d guess there were some 200-250 people who showed up for Danny.

Looks like pretty good number of sales for MBD so far, but we won’t really know how he does come tomorrow, right? Or does that get posted later on tonight/early tomorrow? I always assumed that Tuesday is the official day for first week sales so I’ll find out one way or the other :-) 75k does sound a little steep, though, so I’ll stick w/45-50k b/c it sounds like an reasonable amount for first week sales. Either way, if Danny’s sales are close to 45k I’ll most definitely be happy for him :-)

Ellen, you are correct. KU was going to do a limited tour this year as he has been working on a new cd. They may have decided to add a few more shows since he really does enjoy performing live. I just checked out Kris’s tour dates and it does appear he will be opening a few shows for Keith. Good for him. That really is a great opportunity for him.

I saw KU at Summerfest last year and the opener was Counting Crows, not your typical country opener! The sad thing was that the Amphitheater was not even half full for the Crows and the crowd was rather underwhelmed. I felt kind of bad for them. Of course the place filled in and went wild when KU came on. We’ll have to wait and see what happens for Kris, but I do wish him well.

****Cheryl**** posted this earlier and it’s too good not to repeat–I have thought this same thing so many times! Cheryl took the words right out of my mouth, and as always, expressed herself beautifully:

“Grandmaster As far as I’m concerned, the million dollar question is why do the haters listen to Danny’s music and talk about him so much? I have no interest in certain artists so I have no interest in listening to their music much less talk about their music or about them as people (especially hateful stuff). I may see one of these artists by pure accident on some tv program, and then perhaps I might say if I liked the song/performance. But, I have no interest in seeking out information about some artist I claim not to like. I just don’t get it!

If I were to constantly seek out information about an artist I claim to dislike, or go to blogs to write about them I would start questioning my own sanity. Or at least I would re-examine my true feelings about the artist and probably come to the conclusion that I really LIKE the artist and am only fooling myself and others!”

Pam, I’m glad the iTunes thing is working. I have never done this “fan” thing before, they ought to issue operating procedure manuals or something. Ah well, every day is an adventure. ;)

Cindy, it is indeed strange. I think there is a combination of factors. I think some of it is due to immaturity or other limitations and getting swept away by mob mentality. Something like an Idolatry episode that was particularly vicious and cynical could strike the match. I think normal people would tend to feel shame after something like that, so they have a motivation to keep reinforcing to each other that their target really was a bad guy. That accounts for a lot of it, I think. Then there’s also the factor that I think that the internet makes it easier for people with personality disorders to play their tricks. That’s part of it too. I’m just glad that it’s not as much of a factor as it used to be. There are probably quite a few people who feel jealous of Danny, but not that many that really believe that he isn’t a good person, I don’t think. Of course, there are some to whom it doesn’t matter whether he is or not, they’ve got their own agendas.

  268. Ellen B. on Tue, 9th Mar 2010 12:21 am

I listened to the Chicago interview, where the DJs wanted to play the tape of Danny’s interview last year when he said that he wanted to make a soul/Latin album. The DJs were friendly enough; I don’t think they meant any harm. But I think that Danny, whether through the internet or otherwise, is very aware of the hate-tards and naysayers out there. And his knowledge is current (not stuff from when he was on AI), so he is keeping his finger on the pulse. I don’t think he otherwise would have reacted as he did to friendly DJs, or asked Jannikas to let us know about the reviews on iTunes. Maybe Danny needs to know what is being said about him, but it’s sad that he’s aware of all the you-know-what out there. I don’t think the DJs held anything against Danny, although it’s possible some listeners (esp. nonfans) might have gotten a negative impression.

  269. Ellen B. on Tue, 9th Mar 2010 12:30 am

Yes, Josie, the anonymity of the Internet allows people to let their baser side take over. I’m sure some of the folks are young, but I’ve seen posts by so-called-adults too. I am also convinced that at least a few folks have mental problems or personality disorders. (The latter are highly resistant to treatment.) At least we can be reasonably sure that most of these folks aren’t posting from prison, as prison access to computers is severely limited. But I will say that a lot of folks in prison have personality disorders.

  277. Betty on Tue, 9th Mar 2010 3:36 am

Good grammar in my home growing up was considered very important. When a mistake was made, we were corrected.

  278. bosman on Tue, 9th Mar 2010 4:50 am

Betty, I agree, but the problem is that only standardized grammar is considered good grammar. It is very confining and quite misleading. It hardens human relations. There are certainly varying degrees grammatical errors under that standardized canon. And there is the aspect of sociolinguistic, where a departure from the standardized, grammatically proper form is not only expected, but highly encouraged. That’s how the language, in part, evolves.

Danny’s “gooder and gooder” adage is the proof that Danny cannot and will not be confined by man-made standardizations. It is a sign of a true artist – never be confined by standards, be they grammatical, music or any other.

Thank you for raising this up. :)

So I do agree with you that in certain social classes people must speak standardized grammar, but the artists, musicians in particular, must not be confined by that generally accepted standard. They must do all that it takes to stand out and speaking outside grammatical cannon is one of the ways of standing out.
