Hi Lulu! I just caught up on last night’s discussion page. So much going on! Good reviews coming in on Danny’s album. In comparison to Adam’s review, the NY review was a love fest!
While many think Be Somebody was a strange choice, I love it and think it will appeal to a different set of fans.
Couldn’t sleep this morning. Woke up at 3AM. I hope Danny, Ivan, Brandon all are getting a good nights rest!

Oh, I saw Danny’s album peaked at #15 on Amazon’s overall chart, and #30 on iTunes’ overall chart some hours ago! I’m quite confident that he may hit #1 after his CD coming out or after appearing on Idol.

Good morning everyone! I am up early today and noticed the Fox 6 thing, hope I get to catch him on there. lulu, they said the 7:00 hour, which I believe would start in about half an hour. Also lulu, I agree with Jan that your English is great! I don’t remember ever having a problem understanding what you mean.
I thought it was so funny, when I logged in the ladies were talking about Danny’s hair! Just like us. That cracked me up. They said his hair keeps getting better and better. I guess when you are on a positive trend, even the hair cooperates!

I just reread the originial New York Times review of the David Cook Cd and it was quite similiar to Danny’s. Let’s all remembner that David’s Cd went platinum so that is a good sign. Not a love fes but some good moments.

I saw that Danny is currently #34 on the 7 Day Rolling chart and down 40 spins for the week. But I think that’s because he wasn’t played on the Top 40 countdown this weekend. I do believe he will regain those spins.

Hi! I haven’t seen you post in a while. I do remember the NYT review of David Cook’s CD being kind of mixed, like their review of Danny’s CD. But I can’t remember exactly what it said. If you have the link to that, would you mind posting it here please?
Big things are happening. If Danny’s OS and general interest in him was increased just by a mere mention of him on the show a few weeks ago, imagine what his appearing on the show will do! I can’t wait.
FOGS – I love watching the idol bump after an artist appears on idol. You can almost watch it climb with ever few minutes. Hope history repeats itself.

Latrece, they said Danny will be on in the next hour. They haven’t said what time precisely, that I have heard anyway.
Danny ended up #34 on the mediabase published chart (the one that counts) and up 113 spins. I’m sure he will gain back those 40 spins and more as the week goes on. It is shaping up to be a super fun Danny week. Are you all ready for the ride?

Pam, yes, #3 market rank! It was an auto add, but I believe that means it is now considered on their playlist. I think auto adds happen when the station plays it a certain number of times, mediabase “assumes” it is added. I don’t know if the definition varies by station or not. But I assume that Chicago listeners can now request the song with good expectation that it will be played!

Hi all you `earlybirds`, although it`s past 2 here- Had a day without the internet yesterday-withdrawal symptoms are AWFUL-but, getting in practice for Thurs.night and Friday, as AI airs Friday here and I`m determined to watch Danny without hearing about it first- I`d be grateful if someone can tell me which stations have taped the interviews this morning, cos I was just too late for them?? Cindy, I sympathise-I have a `one sided` sinus infection and it`s affecting my eye as well-horrid-get well soon- I feel `wired` today, it`s just SO exciting- even `though I won`t get the album for a while, I`ve got the previews on, non stop!! Actually, getting really emotional about it now, feel so proud of our Danny! See some reviews are out already- but, at the end of the day, the public will vote with their purses-and I think this is going to be HUGELY successful-Danny isn`t trad.country and that will always upset the traditional `twang loving` critics- If he had a album filled with weepy love songs, then they`d be complaining-now, I hear some of the critics are saying there isn`t enough ballads-implying that`s all Danny can sing- What a load of rubbish-He proved long ago that he can sing ANYTHING-This is the only album where I like ALL the songs-and even those I wasn`t keen on, are growing on me- I`m also very confident that the second single will be played by more radio stations over here-remember, we haven`t got country music radio-so it is an even bigger compliment that our radio stations are clamouring to get an interview with him! I had to watch the Fox interview in the middle of a busy day, but I didn’t have lunch break, so Danny’s interview was my lunch today! Great interview and Danny’s energy is infectious.
I just messaged my Facebook friend who works on the Rockford country station, Q98.5 Remember, she told me several weeks ago that corporate wouldn’t allow them to add Danny.
I asked her if Danny was still off their radar…told her about how well My Best Days is doing on charts. that the CD releases tomorrow and that he’s singing it on Idol, etc.
It just doesn’t make sense to me that they can’t play the song!
I’ll let you guys know if I get a reply from her.

I just posted my reaction to the NYT review, since it’s relevant here too I’ll “cut and paste”:
Interesting review from the NYT on Danny’s “My Best Days”. This is the same writer who said about Danny’s tour performance:
“The most muscular vocalist “Idol” has seen in some years, Danny Gokey, came alive on the Rascal Flatts songs “What Hurts the Most” and “My Wish,” shouting the refrains like a melodic Henry Rollins.”
I am pretty satisfied with the review, obviously the guy likes Danny’s voice and said the album was well produced (which of course it would be, considering).
I could quibble with him on some of the details. I don’t think Danny’s transcendant moment on AI was “Jesus Take the Wheel”, I think the writer kind of made that up to support his hypothesis about Danny’s spirituality being a driving force in his music. I disagree with him about that. I think it is a factor, because it is a factor in who Danny is. But I think Danny wanted this album to be a representation of who he is and where he is in his life right now, and that goes way beyond just the aspect of religion. So “I Will Not Say Goodbye” describes the raw devastation of his loss (I agree it’s the best song). “My Best Days are Ahead of Me” describes how he is now able to move forward (I don’t agree that it doesn’t suit him). “It’s Only” reflects his high priority to make helping others a part of his life (I disagree that the song is morbid, that was a strange comment). From his comments, we know that Danny is still not feeling ready for a new romance in his life, so it doesn’t surprise me in the least that there is only one “love song” and it comes pretty far down the playlist (I LOVE “Crazy Not To”, btw). In wanting to provide a picture of who he is, I also am unsurprised that Danny included a song about faith (“I Still Believe”) and a very soulful/more R&B type song (“Be Somebody”), and also a couple of songs about just having a good time.
But as I said, overall I’m pleased with the review. The reviewer obviously sees Danny as a talented singer and an artist who is interesting enough to him to put thought into what he has produced. I have learned from watching Danny for a year now that he is a pretty complex and multi-faceted person, and I’m sure this will continue to show in his work. I’m glad this reviewer seems to find him interesting too.

Danny seems so excited about this week. He is cute as can be when he was pointing to his molars in the Rhode Show interview and really cute when he held out his arms for a hug on the Milwaukee interview. He is really getting comfortable on camera and seems much more relaxed than when he first left the Idol show and started interviews with various outlets. He also is very quick witted and I suspect he was not always comfortable with that before, but now enjoys it.
I’m hoping my CD’s come in the mail today! I also hope Itunes downloads the album for me at midnight tonight!

Seriously now, be careful and keep up with the PT. Wondering if your complication involved fluid on the knee (like mine). If so zowzers… hate those horse sized needles to remove the fluid. Take it slow! Took me about 6 months to get back to normal.

I think that reviewer does like Danny, but I wonder if he wanted him to sing Christian music, so that is why he is trying to keep him in that box? And maybe he doesn’t like country!
I say that because he honestly did think JTTW was one of the best (very strange, IMO! It was ok, and the studio really good, but one of the best?)- here is his review of the finale (a Gokey fan posted this at TWOP) where he brings up Danny a couple of times, saying he was better than Kris, and repeating that JTTW was one of the best, and repeating about Danny never being in the bottom 2:

I have a funny story that just happened here at work!
Our restrooms have automatic flush toilets and they never quite fluch everything down, so you have to stand there and push the button to keep flushing until everything goes down. Hardly anybody would stand around the toilet and wait to see if it went down, so toilet paper etc…was always being left for the next person to have to flush. Well, someone in the office made a sign for each stall and stuck it on the door so when you are sitting down you can see the sign plain as day. The sign says something like: “Please flush again until all contents are emptied” and then below, it has a huge smiley face
. Well… in one of the stalls, someone covered the big smiley face with a picture of of a smiling George Clooney! So… I printed 4 pictures of a smiling Danny and covered the smiley faces in the other 4 stalls!! Now everytime I use the restroom I get to look at Danny!! (that is until someone takes his pic down and puts up someone else! – hopefully not Adam Lambert!)

WUSN is a huge add for Danny! They are #3 in market share.
Saw the contest. Amy will be drawing the winners at 8:00 p.m. tomorrow. I’ve got to say that I don’t think that is fair to folks who have avoided the streaming and are waiting until Danny’s CD comes out before listening to it. Who knows when my copy from Amazon will get here? But the earliest opportunity I have to get my hands on a physical copy of the CD is to go to a store after work on Tuesday, and that won’t happen until it’s too late on the East Coast, given the three-hour time difference with the West Coast.
I guess Amy wants to celebrate on March 2nd, the official release date, which makes sense.
I ‘d like to bring up something that I’ve been wanting to address. I feel confident that Danny will gain a number of new fans when he starts touring with Sugarland. I don’t go to concerts very often (or at least I didn’t use to
), but I often end up liking the opening acts, and buying their material. I’m a rabid Basia fan, and attended a concert many moons ago. Her opening act was Ottmar Liebert & Luna Negra. She also let her guitarist, Peter White, perform one of the songs from his then-upcoming album. The next day, the friend I attended the concert with and I hit a music store, and we both bought Ottmar Liebert and Peter White. I went on to become a big fan of Peter White. (Of course, I already had everything that Basia put out!) Something somewhat similar happened years later. I attended the Britt Festival (Jacksonville, Oregon) with a friend. It was her idea to go, and truly, I no longer remember who the main act was. But I was really enchanted with the opening act, a fiddler from Nova Scotia named Natalie MacMaster. So yup, I bought her album. Maybe I’ve been lucky, but I’ve ended up liking the opening acts and buying their material. I could really see fans of Sugarland liking Danny. Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland sounds like a female Danny Gokey to me (albeit with just a touch of twang). Any thoughts about whether the Sugarland tour will give Danny a boost?

I only have a minute, but NewAdventure at TWOP posted another review from the NYT by the same author, written after the season 8 finale. He calls JTTW one of the best performance of the season. Clearly, this writer is a big fan of Danny’s voice and style. I wouldn’t agree about JTTW though, but certainly WHTM, CROCS or YASB.

Thanks rowansmom, that is fascinating that the NYT guy loved Jesus Take the Wheel so much! I thought it was really good, but as you say, I would have ranked others relatively higher. Although having the Carrie version in one’s head and then hearing Danny’s – it is an impressive difference in what he brings to it.
Josie, I have several albums by Ottmar Liebert, but probably more by Peter White. But I find it interesting that after the few concerts I’ve attended, I’ve often bought the offerings of the opening acts. Hope the same will hold true for other people attending the Sugarland tour!

Ellen I would think Danny touring with Sugarland would be a nice boost for his sales and help increase his fan base. You are living proof that opening acts can draw new fans. Why not for Danny too? I also think Danny sounds so amazing live and has the kind of powerful voice that makes people take notice. Sometimes at those concerts, people mill around waiting for the main act, but I truly think Danny’s voice is hard to ignore because it resonates so well.
I should have order from DGO. Silly me. I placed my order with Amazon, so I could by more copies for less money. Darn! No word on my copies yet.
You know what this means. I am going to have to buy another one tomorrow in one of our stores!

I am so excited about this week too, with the album release and the AI appearance. Danny must be stoked and on cloud nine.
Pam I went out to check my front door, like you said, but no CD yet. Bummer
I asked my son to check the Best Buy, Target and Walmart stores if he happens to go in one today to see if Danny’s CD is out early. I know, wishful thinking. I am going to be buying another one or maybe two.
Awesome interview on Fox6. The ladies there were so smitten with Danny. One giggling a lot and the other wanting to give Danny a hug. Hey, who doesn’t want to get a hug from Danny. I would love a great big DannyHug.
My husband was watching the interview with me on the GAC top 20 channel. His first comment was that the lady interviewer keeps touching Danny on the leg. It was odd that my hubby would notice that. I noticed it but hadn’t said anything about it. So, I guess every woman wants to grab hold of our gorgeous, sweet, talented Danny.
I bought my CD from DGO and was notified that it was shipping last Friday via UPS. My scheduled delivery date is tomorrow.
It seems as though many of the radio stations are adding MBD to be ahead of tomorrow’s CD release.

Has anybody been crying today from being so happy for Danny? I can’t help myself – I am listening to some of his music and it is making me cry because I am so proud of him. I will be in a puddle of tears tomorrow and for sure on Thursday when he is on the AI stage!
I am going to call in sick tomorrow because I want to stay at home and listen to Danny all day long by myself with no phones ringing! I don’t know why, but it just seems like I should be at home on Danny’s special day! It’s like a holiday to me!
Cheryl, I just keep thinking how great things are going to be for Danny. He won’t ever have to worry about being broke again! He has worked so hard for this.
I hope he is able to open his heart soon to the possibility of a new romance. That would make his life more complete.
Yes, Cheryl and Betty, I am so excited for Danny and I’m sure all of his fans feel the same way. My birthday is the 3rd, on Wednesday, so this is the best birthday present I could have. This whole week is going to be a pretty exciting week.
This years Idol shows have been so gloomy and depressing for me since Danny hasn’t been on the show, but Thursday will be even better than last year because, like Danny said, he can come out and perform and not have to be judged. He can just enjoy the experience and know that he has MADE IT! I’m so proud of him!!!!

Betty I too hope Danny is able to find romance. I noticed in more than one interview he has said he wants to date someone who doesn’t know who he is. He may have to start dating soon because the more famous he becomes the harder it will be to find someone who is not aware of who he is! When he does find someone, I would guess it is going to happen by surprise, like love sometimes does. It may not happen when and how he wants it to. It’s not really possible to plan for love – so I think it will happen when he least expects it! I do think Danny deserves to be loved and to love again. He seems so warm and caring and I think he would make a great Dad.

Yes Danny will make an amazing Dad. I know that when the right time comes, the right girl will come along and it will be like magic. But who knows when that will be. I know that Danny is saying that he is waiting for the 2 year mark, but he has to go by what his heart is saying. He might not even be ready after 2 years.
Well this season my favorites are Lee and Siobhan. But on the IDF some of their fans dislike Danny intensely so I am rapidly losing interest in this season as well.
After Danny’s performance on Thursday, everything afterward will savor of anti-climax.

I thought something Danny said during the Milwauke Fox6 interview was very telling. One of the reporters mentioned that Danny is a perfectionist and asked him if there were things he might want to change on the album, but at some point just has to let go. Danny said that when he sings live he sings the songs differently as he gets more familiar with the music and at first he was just looking around, listening and doing what he had to. I think that’s why I like his live performances better thatn the studio versions of the song – I think he is constantly perfecting them and he knows how to use this voice in each song better each time he sings it. I do wish he had used his soaring voice more on the CD like he does when he sings live. But he did say he learned a lot by doing this first album and he will know what to do in the future. As amazing as this album is, I bet he will look for and maybe write songs that, as Danny sometimes puts it, fit right into his pocket. He will know exactly what songs show off his strengths.

I have issue with forehead sinuses in spring or at times when the temperature goes up rapidly. They get blocked, cause light inflammation and a headache. The only thing that helps me is a cool, watered cloth that I keep on the forhead for a minute or two.
Three years ago I said a decisive no to antibiotics and take immunity boosters instead, such as shark liver oil. That works for me.
I must be a total nutcase, because I have already begun to look forward to his next album, to be able to enjoy songs he has written by himself for himself.
The next chapter of his life is going to be so exciting. I do look forward to seeing him find someone special and having a family. Can’t you just imagine all the new and dynamic nuances that will bring to his music?

bosman I am very disappointed to hear some of Siobhan and Lee’s fans do not like Danny. Where are you hearing this? How can people be so hateful? I don’t even understand how those fans can not acknowledge that Danny has a good voice. I don’t care if they don’t like the kind of music he does, or if they don’t like him personally (for whatever weird reason), but how can anyone deny that he has vocal chops. All of the judges and obviously the AI producers and 19E recognize his talent. Can all of the experts be wrong? I may not like the kind of music Adam sings and I don’t really like the high screeches, but I at least acknowledge that the man has mad vocals. I just wish these fans would give Danny the respect he deserves.

Can’t believe danny was on “Talk of the Town” on News Channel 5 today and I missed it!!! I was getting ready for school while that was on not really paying attention to anything else. That’s what happens when you try and rush to get out of the door just to make it in time to a very boring psychology lecture class
Anyway… but I did look at the clip and he was just as cute as ever! I can’t wait to get that cd tomorrow. Not really sure if amazon’s supposed to email me letting me know that the cd that iaamfmspid from twitter gifted to me has been shipped or not, but I checked the receipt that she emailed to me saying that the delivery date was between this Friday and next Tuesday! With Danny it is so unlike with other singers. I mean you like them, play their CDs, watch their videos and eventually you get tired of them. But with Danny, his songs always leave you hungry for more. And that’s so strange, because he does impart something good in a listener, he leaves something inside, yet we want more.
It is like a healthy addiction. Healthy probably because it is non-corporeal (unlike other addiction substances) and affects human soul that in turn affects the body, not vice versa – as is the case with other “medicaments.”
Cheryl, it mostly involves teenagers who have different needs to those Danny can give.
So far I am resisting to post on Lee and Siobhan IDF board because I know I will get into conflict with them. I will compare Lee and Siobhan with Danny. That’s an inevitability.
“Fans” are not discussing Danny, they throw Danny under the carpet, when he is mentioned in other threads a slew of puke signs follows. Yea, very mature.
Many Danny haters hate Danny because his music and the way he vocalizes is not for an empty music indulgence. But teenagers just want to indulge – that’s why they like Adam, Kris and Carrie. They meet their needs. They are the “sweet” syrupy artists and their main music purpose is to champion indulgence in any shape or form.
Danny is the the total opposite and hence the dislike.
Cheryl, I noticed on the radio tour that as it progressed, Danny started feeling more comfortable with the songs, changing them up and “perfecting” them. In particular, I didn’t think Danny was comfortable with the wordiness of “Tiny Life” at the song’s debut, but now he really is.
I’m sure I will come to love the studio version of his songs. But the acoustic versions will hold a special place in my heart. With my hearing impairment, the studio versions don’t allow me to fully savor that rich, wide, raspy voice that is the essence of Danny. I hope there will be a way to acquire acoustic versions of all his songs.
But, I just want to add, Danny can also be syrupy and Crazy not to is a good example. I also wish that to be the 3rd single. Even though Get Away is a song that rallies male fans, I’d rather he “calms” more of you ladies – with Crazy not to.

Pam, it depends on how well Danny’s single and album sell. Darius Rucker has released four songs from his CD. The first three went to #1. The fourth is stuck at #4. From an album that does well, it is usually not uncommon to see three or four singles. I don’t know why David Cook only released two. I thought his album did well. I don’t think that the three or four singles deal is specific to country. On albums that are really well-received, it’s pretty common.

I think Danny’s next single, “I Will Not Say Goodbye” will also appeal to the male gender. A couple of DJ’s mentioned, after Danny singing that song in their studio, that “Man, that is a powerful song”. So I think that men will relate emotionally to that song as well.
Okay, The CMT 12 pack is acting up again. It won’t bring up the voting page. I’ll keep on trying. It should come back, like before. Maybe there are just so many people voting for Danny that it’s getting jammed up.

Cheryl, I cracked up at your comment that if Danny wants to meet someone who doesn’t know him that he better hurry up! Ha! I don’t actually think he is going to have a problem finding someone who loves him for himself, but no doubt he will have good judgment about that. I think it was also you who said you like the acoustic versions. There are a couple of acoustic versions that I just love. One of them is “Life On Ya” that Toni got at Nolas. He looks so happy in that and sounds great, and I love the energy of it live. Did you catch where he looks to Def and Ivan to get prompted for the next verse at one point? I wondered what he was laughing at and finally figured it out. Cute! I also love the “Be Somebody” that he did in Columbus, we just got an MP3 of that one, not a video. There are other really good ones, but those stick in my memory.
Pam, I think the Fantasy concert is the one Adam just did in Fantasy Springs. I am not sure what the drama of the day is about that one.

Danny achieving great post Idol success is finally at hand. It’s so great seeing the numbers climb! Danny’s numbers and the good NYT review (well, for them) are getting attention on other sites like MJs and elsewhere–people aren’t quite sure how to react. What Danny’s detractors said couldn’t be done is happening–and I can’t imagine what will happen after he performs this Thursday. But I do know it’s going to be great.
Bosman, I saw those posts at IDF and am sickened by them. However, I will keep on posting in Lee’s thread, because like Danny he needs all the support he can get. Not that he’s unpopular there or anything, but he’s not a frontrunner right now and needs his fans to help him become one. I don’t understand either why certain peeps there (Lagonzo, DW4WD or whatever their name is) get so riled up at comparing Lee or anyone else to past contestants on the show. I know this is discussed every time an Idol releases a CD but does anyone know for sure if the preordered CD that are shipped before the release date count towards Danny’s first week sales. I have heard that they do and that they don’t and would really like to know. I suspect that the preorders on Itunes will count because the album probably won’t be downloaded until tomorrow. I got an email today that my Amazon preorder shipped today and my digital Itunes preorder will download tomorrow. I plan to also go to Walmart and pick up a hard copy to hold me over until my Amazon order comes.

Lizzy I think that those pre-order sales should count. I remember it being stated that Susan Boyle had the most pre-order sales ever on Amazon, before her album was released. And I believe all those sales counted for her so hopefully they will count for Danny as well.
Also I hope that Josh Thompson does better than HDD predicted him to do. A lot of times they are pretty close in their estimates of how many albums artists sell, but there are times where they are off. I believe they were off 20,000 when it came to predicting Josh Turner’s sales.

I believe they go by first day sales and I think Danny will get a bump later in the week after he performs on AI which may throw off their prediction. We should get a prediction from HDD by Wednesday of this week, right??
I’m waiting for Steph to check in – I think she went to the Woodbridge CD signing at Best Buy. I am curious how many people were there. Do you think the sales at Best Buy today will count towards his first week sales since it is a day early?

We should get HDD’s first estimate for Danny’s sale come Wednesday. They usually do this for all artists that release albums each week. And this is based off of first day sales.
They could be off regarding Danny’s sales especially since his appearance on AI Thursday could help him. A lot of times they are pretty close in their estimations but sometimes they are off.
But Wednesday we should have an idea of how Danny might do, without factoring in what sales he could get from his AI appearance.
I just popped in to DGO and wrote some posts there. When I first signed in, I saw 350 people there! They really do need to change that font and fix the nested reply problem though. But it’s great to see his site finally getting so much traffic.

I think that any CD sales he gets at Best Buy should count towards his first week. I remember Adam’s CD came out a day earlier than orignally planned. I think that any CD’s Danny sold at Best Buy should count towards his first week sales, in addition to his pre-orders.
I hope Danny gets a big banner tomorrow on Itunes, that could really help him out. Josh Turner didn’t get one, but I hope Danny gets one.

Hallo everyone-Well, it`s March 2nd here-I tweeted Danny 1 minute past midnight to congratulate him-I was surprised that Amazon had the album available on the 1st, but they had the single early, too-I am holding out for the Cd to arrive-however- It must be a thrill to see the CDs in the shops over there-and, I would imagine, the large advertising boards?? I hope the day may come when Danny`s album is released over here? March 2nd should be a day of celebration-it`s very `flat` here-so, I`m so thankful for all you guys at IHeart-especially as VC has returned to the fold! Yes, it would make the day complete if Karen popped in-she was always first on last year-and she was a very sweet lady-I don`t know how she can just `switch off`-as she was a HUGE fan of Danny-
I LOVED the interview with Danny this morning-I had to pick out the best for the DGEurope site and that was IT! It was all by video link this morning, but the interviewers just had such a rapport with Danny, in comparison, some others I watched were not so good! I`ve been reading about the other sites and how some of this years `Idols` fans are critical of Danny- I`m glad I do not visit these sites, because I would be inclined to say-`Let`s see where YOUR favourite is in a years time`It is incredible that they are STILL hating on Danny, and he`s come so far now, leaving AI behind- Having said that, I can`t wait for this Friday and his return!

Did Matt Bjorke get “Life On Ya” mixed up with “Crazy Not To” in his Roughstock review? Which song do you think he was referring to?
The CCM thing is really scraping on my last nerve. Maybe it’s because there are two songs that theoretically could be considered CCM, and that’s why everyone is labelling the album CCM, even though that is 2 songs out of 10? “I Still Believe” is the only song that I would label as CCM/gospel, because the reference to walking on water is pretty clearly a biblical reference to Christ walking on water. But “It’s Only” seems more inspirational country than CCM to me, despite the reference to “Jesus.” (And it was authored by country musicians, not CCM musicians.) So is everyone saying that Lee Ann Womack has put out a CCM album, given that her latest single is called “There is a God?”

On Matt and the CCM: I could be wrong but I think he is actually reacting to that NYT review with a similar viewpoint to what I expressed earlier today. Spirituality/religion is part of who Danny is, but it’s not what he’s all about,i.e. limited to as far as his interests. His song choices expressed much more than that.

But Danny’s far bigger than that. Yes, CCM may embrace him, but his reach will go way beyond that.

Cindy, Ellen and Carole, Lulu, it is puzzling why some people have labeled Danny as singer that should sing Christian music, other than what he’s wanted: a spiritual person that wants to sing music with a positive message. It doesn’t seem that hard to grasp….
Three comments:
I wish people would stop trying to box Danny in, and just let him be a phenomenal artist period!
You can’t imagine how happy it makes me to have that mental image of beaten down Danny Gokey. climbing onto that private plane, meeting with stylist, and releasing his first album tomorrow.

Ellen, Excellent point. Danny is the same when it comes to his music verses other country singers. Danny is just a spiritual person like other country artist and most everyone. Danny will not subdue and hide his spirituality for anyone. He will always remain true to himself. Another reason I love Danny Gokey.
Hopefully, last post about CCM. I think “I Still Believe” qualifies as CCM/gospel, but I don’t think “It’s Only” does. Even though IO mentions Jesus, the song also tells a story, like many country songs do. But most CCM (at least the stuff I listen to) doesn’t really do that.
I am concerned about the repeated mentions of CCM, because I think some people, who may react viscerally to the CCM genre, may get the wrong idea about the overall album. It’s a good think Danny is touring with Sugarland, so that country fans can hear Danny for themselves and make up their own minds.
(P.S.) to Cindy S.: I am not trying to be offensive in talking about my concerns with the CCM label that reviewers are trying to hang on Danny. I love MercyMe, Petra, Stryper, Kathy Troccoli, etc.
Speaking of which, that NYT reviewer apparently never heard Kathy Troccoli’s mainstream hits, “Everything Changes,” “If I’m Not in Love,” and “Tell Me Where It Hurts,” if he thinks only Amy Grant ever made the crossover. Kathy sounds a lot like Taylor Dayne, and even did some backing vocals hor her.
Wonder why some would have us believe that you have to choose between being a person of faith and any type of musical artist other then CCM.
Sometimes I think it is the church musical director thing that throws them.
Every country album I own has references to faith.

Jannikas, you have made my point precisely! (And a lot more succinctly than I did!) Danny is a spiritual person who wants to sings positive songs. And what’s wrong with that? We get plenty of the dark stuff; why not balance it out?
Plus, I just don’t get it. Has anyone listened to the lyrics of Lee Ann Womack’s “There is a God?” Can you imagine if Danny sang that song? He would be accused of shoving religion down people’s throats. Yet I’ve never heard anyone refer to Lee Ann Womack as anything but a country singer. Seems like there’s a double-standard, one for Danny and the other for everyone else.

The CCM comparisons annoy me too. But I’m trying to stay positive, focusing on the fact that the reviews have been pretty good, even if they seem to want to box Danny in as a CCM singer.
I was reading the posts at MJs and there was a post by someone who I don’t think is a Danny fan, speculating that Danny could outsell both Kris and Adam. Even Danny’s fans aren’t that optimistic, LOL
But I think he could.

Lulu, the New York Times and Roughstock review both mention CCM. Neither review is bad. The NYT review is decent, and the Roughstock review is positive. But I’m worried that some potential fans who are not religious or who are of a different faith may be turned off by the reference to CCM.

The interviews I was talking about are those that a number of UK radio stations have requested-in fact, they KEEP requesting!! We, DannyGokeyUK, managed to get these stations to play his song MBD and then they put his bio on their websites-after that they were all clamouring for interviews-Danny gave us the number to call-which we passed to them- They called the Promotions guy at Sony- He didn`t even get back to them-so they came back to us-and I got in touch with Management-who really seem to CARE-and they got onto Sony for us-Yes, that`s how hard it is! They have been promised an interview when things quieten down- Hallelujah!
Getting back to a subject I touched on earlier in the day (about my later buying music from the opening acts of concerts I have attended), who in the world would ever guess that I would ever buy fiddle music? But Natalie MacMasters was awesome. Just like Ottmar Liebert (Nouveau Flamenco guitar). They are not artists I would ever have discovered on my own, if they had not happened to be the opening acts at concerts I attended.
So I really believe that Danny’s tour with Sugarland will bring in new fans for him.

Hi everyone, just scanning thru the posts. So much good news!
- #31 on Billboard chart
- #4 on iTunes country and into the 20s on the overall iTunes list
- good radio adds (I see 5 overall?) including Chicago, guess our voting on Cheryl’s radio station poll didn’t hurt anything
I did go down to check out Danny’s appearance at the Best Buy in northern Virginia. There was a good crowd, and they definitely were looking to see Danny and cheering him throughout his set and as they got short glimpses of him while the band was setting up. It was a younger group mostly, with some professional folks, some families, various ethnicities represented. I’d guess there were at least 200 people there, possibly more as in the store setup people were standing in between aisles in some cases and I couldn’t always see.
Danny did six songs, which was more than I was expecting (MBD, Like that’s a Bad thing, Tiny Life, WHTM, Life on Ya, and IWNSG). He sounded just as good as usual though the sound setup wasn’t quite perfect. Brandon and Ivan and the new guitar player (Greg?). Ivan appeared to have an electric bass, not acoustic; couldn’t tell about Greg. Greg also sings a little but Brandon did most of the background vocals. Danny looked very cute in a black leather jacket and red tee, and of course the jeans and chain and his SHF pendant.
A lot of people had bought Danny’s CD on their way in the store, and they were also selling it in the autograph line. So I picked up a hardcopy, which made the drive home quite bearable
I didn’t stay for the autographs though, as it was going to be close to 9 by the time I got home anyway.
I don’t think the CCM thing would have bothered anyone in that crowd. When Danny was talking about his bio and mentioned having been a church music director, quite a few people in the crowd gave that a big cheer which surprised Danny. He went on to say that he still attends church and enjoys it, and that got an even bigger cheer.
A lady next to me was a fan of Danny’s from the show, and said she had learned about today’s event from a sign at the store. She hadn’t realized Danny was doing country music, but had come out to see him with her daughter who also seemed to be a fan. The mom said she had gone to see Jason Castro on his mall tour, but Jason had nowhere near the same number of people present (duh–err, sorry, not a Jason fan here).

Thanks Cindy. Ellen, I think it’s simply because he was so strongly tagged as having the gospel music background and being religious, he’s not southern, and he’s got that voice that people usually associate with r&b.
People focus too much on superficialities, that’s never a surprise. They focus on the “sound” of country music, rather than the “values” aspect which is just as important in defining what it is. That’s the part where Danny is a PERFECT fit. Some reviewers don’t know Danny and they don’t know country music, so they don’t get this at all. Or they focus too much (IMO) on the sound aspect.
I think that the NYT guy missed the boat on this, but I don’t think that Matt B was trying to shove Danny in a box. I think he was saying that spiritual elements in this album make sense and work well because the songs need to represent who the singer is, and that’s part of who Danny is. I agree with that. I thought his review was thoughtful and showed a pretty good understanding of Danny. I love it that he liked the album so much!

I did not get my multiple CDs but I have patience and they will get here soon enough and I am sure I will get the itunes order by tomorrow AM. I got home late this evening and went to watch the Fox TV interview it was interesting how she kept telling Danny he was HOT and I am sure she meant it too. Danny must have a great sense of humor he has fun with all the interviews he does. I am off to do some voting. I received the March SHF newsletter, Danny wrote a great article on “Choice” and you can probably read it at the SHF site.

Yeah, I was happy to go, and it was one of those days where I figured I deserved a little treat, right?
I wouldn’t have gone just for an autograph signing, esp having to go past DC where the traffic can be rather daunting at rush hour.
But seeing that Danny would be singing too pushed me over the edge–worked out fine, and I was happy for Danny to see that he did have a pretty good crowd there. I took a few pics, may try to load them later. They aren’t very good of Danny as there were lots of medium-to-tall peeps standing in front of me, and he wasn’t really up on a stage to help with the view.

I think that a lot of people voted “no” on the Idol chatter poll because they don’t like Danny. There are a lot of people online who don’t like him. But he does have a good amount of people that do like him and hopefully a lot of them will buy his CD this week.

Billie, there will always people who will want to rain on Danny’s parade. They never had any intention of buying Danny’s music or seeing him perform live. I honestly don’t think most even have the money to do any of that. lol.

Ellen, I totally get it…not offended at all. I don’t want Danny to be confined to CCM either. The truth is, CCM will always appeal to a limited group of people. (There’s some awesome CCM and some very mediocre CCM, and I’ll be the first to admit that.)
But the truth is, if Danny was confined to that genre, he would have a very difficult time crossing over…and quite frankly, I think his haters and detractors would LOVE that. That’s why they want to box him in like that.
I do believe this–and if you’re not a Christian or person of faith, bear with me–I believe that because Danny has committed himself to God, that God will bless him and direct his paths…and he may end up doing and being far more than anyone thought he could. (Sermon over.

Cindy S., I’ve heard some awesome CCM music. I think a lot of people who have never heard it would be surprised. It’s the lyrics that will trip them up if they are not inclined a certain way. But the music and the voices — incredible! (I’m sure there are some CCM artists that are mediocre, but not anyone I’ve bought or listened to.) And no, Cindy, you won’t offend me. I’m a cradle Catholic, and I’m pretty up front about my religion. It’s important to me. (But I also don’t like to be stereotyped or boxed in any more than Danny does.) I pray that you are right, and God is directing Danny’s path. I’ve just never felt this way about an artist before. Danny’s voice moves me, and I really don’t know why.

It’s Your Choice

As I sit down to write for this months “Danny’s Voice” it is an exciting time. I have my debut album being released this month (March 2nd, 2010). Next month we are thrilled to launch our very own Sophia’s Heart of Music & Arts programming to start in Milwaukee, WI and in Nashville, TN. All these things have finally physically manifested into reality, while just a while ago they were only a dream in my heart. I’ve come to notice that all these great things have been birthed by one common denominator; a choice.
Dreams just don’t fall out of the sky and into our laps. If you’re dreaming to become a surgeon, you won’t wake up one morning with a doctorates degree and a head full of the knowledge to carry out surgical procedures. It is something that comes into being through deliberate and consistent choices.
If you look over your life you will notice that the very place you are at today is 100% connected to the choices you have made. Some of you may look back at your life and say that some things were not your fault, and perhaps you were a victim of child abuse or you were born into a very poor family and that is why you are there. I completely understand and sympathize with people who have been dealt a hard hand in life. However, you must understand that if you stay stuck in your past, defeated by what has happened, that, in itself, is a choice. So many of us have had things thrown in our lap that isn’t our fault, but I want to give you some good news; your choices today can turn it around. You have the power to change those negative situations around, become stronger and help other people who are stuck in the same spot that you once were. Here are 5 easy steps that you can hang onto and meditate on while making new choice.
Let go of the past and all the negative feelings associated with it
Begin to believe that you can make better choices and that things can turn around for the better
Have faith in God to get you through and make you stronger
Be patient and consistent day in and day out
Watch your life completely change and new healthy habits form
As you begin this process you will notice that in the beginning it might be tough, but as you press through it will get easier and easier! This is because you are beginning to form new habits. I really want you to enjoy life, but the first key in enjoying life is to take responsibility for all your actions and know the power you have with the choices you make.

Hello all – I was concerned because I didn’t get an email about Danny’s CDs being sent (as some of you did). But arriving home in my car today, I spotted all of them by my front door (left by UPS). So that was a very pleasant surprise. On top of that, because no one else was in the house, I was able to put them into my stereo and turn the volume way up. Wow – sounded great. Could hear the background music and of course Danny’s powerful voice so clearly…so much better than computer speakers. All that hard work – finally paying off for Danny and I couldn’t be happier for him, and of course, all of us who are able to enjoy his amazing CD!! Thanks Danny!!

Ellen, agree completely on the CCM thing. They only harp on that because of his background. I Don’t think he mentions God any more than any other country singer. And I wish they wouldn’t; I agree with you because I know I would not pick up an album that I thought was CCM. (I am a religious person and active in my church; just don’t enjoy CCM music).

All I can think about is how proud Sophia would be or is right now.
I have tears of joy and I am so thankful and proud of Danny for putting out such an amazing CD. He will surely rise to #1. I think the best way I can show my support and say Thank You is to also make a contribution to SHF. I am so happy that I went to that Aug.19th AI concert that started me on followng Danny’s career and I later found the iheart site and it connected me with some wonderful people. Gokeyguy, I think Danny is still #2 country, #4 overall. Please keep in mind that iTunes is only a part of Danny’s overall sales, and the position fluctuates. We still don’t know what Danny’s overall sales will look like. Also, not to rain on anyone’s parade (because I do feel the excitement), we shouldn’t start comparing Danny to Kradison until we have a better idea of how Danny’s CD will perform.
But Ana is right. If and when Danny reaches #1 (on either chart), we need to take a screenshot.

I actually don’t think that poll is accurate. You can cheat on it- all you have to do is clear your cache and keep revoting. Eliot Yamin was telling his followers to cheat on it the other week on that “hot idol” poll.
I think it could be a few haters pumping up the Nos.
Although Danny doesn’t have as many active internet fans as Kris and Adam. They tend to congregate here in safety and at Twitter and often don’t make their Danny presence known on common Idol sites, so it is possible there are few Danny fans voting on that.

OK so I am still awake and it is a good thing that Danny is heading over to California where it is warmer where he will most likely have to keep his promise of streaking if he got to #1. His fans will need some type of proof that he kept his promise.

It was funny as I stopped to get something to eat at Wendy’s for the drive home. A young man came in with two girls, and was clear they had been to see Danny also. One of the little girls said she was going to be able to go to school tomorrow and make her friends jealous because she got to see Danny. The young man seemed a little ambivalent if Danny was his thing but he was a good sport if not.

After work, I stopped off at my local Freddie’s to see whether they had the March 1st edition of Country Weekly, with the Danny video pix. Then I went to the music department to ask if they were going to have Danny’s CD tomorrow (so that I would not have to drive all over town to get it). The salesperson said yes, but that they didn’t get that many copies in. He recommended calling at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow when the store opens, and asking them to hold a copy. Arghh!
My Gokeyholism came to the fore. I chatted with the salesperson (a young twentysomething male) until the store closed, and told him all about Danny. That he was #2 country/#3 overall, on iTunes. The guy was surprised and impressed. He claimed that doing that well on iTunes is really impressive. He explained why, but I didn’t follow him. I don’t know whether or not the guy knows what he’s talking about, but I’m going to believe him.
Anyway, I told him I post on a fan site, and whipped out my Bushwhacker tickets to prove my fan status. The guy knows who Danny is, and is reasonably well-disposed to him. I think I convinced him to give Danny’s album a listen! I recommended “Get Away,” based on Bosman’s feedback, and warned him about “I Still Believe.” But he just said that a lot of country music has religious overtones. Hear that, Mr. New York Times? The sales guy didn’t seem at all concerned about that.
I think I peaked his curiosity. If he actually listens to Danny’s album . . . Well, what’s the song? Another one bites the dust!

Hi Ellen. My computer is singing love songs to me and doing so good. My phone lines were messed up and my when AT&T came out and fixed my phone lines (my phones quit working off and on and had a lot of static) my computer worked well also. I guess it was my phone lines all along.

I need to get to bed so I can up to reserve my copy of Danny’s CD. Have no idea why Freddies isn’t getting many copies in. I swear Oregon has some of the worse-stocked stores I’ve ever seen. Wal-Mart was out of Adam’s CD for almost 2 months (but at least they had a bunch in the beginning, when it was first released). What gives with only stocking a handful of Danny’s CDs?

Oh gosh, I didn’t think I would cry. But I did.
At the Rodeo Club in San Jose Wed. night. Hubby said to book a room (so we can stay overnight) and come home next day. He really is J of my always listening and talking about Danny, but he loves me and is willing to take me. Wow, this is great.

We get free CD’s with a $12.00 ticket at front door of club! Isn’t that a bargain? Like I said, I can hardly wait to meet or hear Danny in person.

So, Danny’s album ‘My Best Days’ is now available for download from iTunes (here’s a direct download link) – and I’m shocked to report that it’s already #3 on the iTunes overall chart. I don’t remember Adam/Kris ever ranking that high. And I know we can’t compare since Adam/Kris released into a very competitive field last Nov, but it must be very heartening for Danny’s fans to see him ranked so high.

This is what I wrote over on roughstock:
While he was on AI, I noticed that Danny exhibited a rare ability to express diametrically-opposite emotions simultaneously. It is that rare ability to make you feel happy yet sad, desperate yet hopeful, strong yet vulnerable at the same time.
I wondered if he would be able to pull the same thing off in his debut album. I am quite satisfied that he did. I Will Not Say Goodbye is one such example – the song is an emotional tour-de-force. It makes you feel exhausted, yet strangely fills your batteries. Even the happy, uplifting ones such as Get Away and Life on Ya vocally display a sense of urgency, a plea to live life to the fullest.
As a non-Christian (Muslim), I certainly applaud him staying true to what he stands for without excluding anyone from his intrinsically universal message.

I do not know if it was appropriate for me to interject this last sentence (given some, mildly put, less than favorable views of my religion), but I feel that people have to know that Danny commands universal appeal.
