“It’s Only” Reviews

I’m posting these reviews because they say more than the default ‘Listen to Danny’s new single. What do you think?’ type of articles. Some are good, some are bad, as all song reviews are, since tastes vary immensely.

MTV.com: ‘American Idol’ Alum Danny Gokey Debuts Country Single ‘It’s Only’ and MTVAsia.com:

Earlier this year, “American Idol” third-place finisher Danny Gokey made waves when he said he was thinking of releasing a country album. Turns out, he wasn’t joking, eventually signing a deal with RCA’s Nashville label.

And on Friday (November 6), fans finally got to hear his first foray into the genre, when he debuted “It’s Only,” a swooning, countrified ballad on Milwaukee radio station FM 106.1.

Written by Lady Antebellum’s Dave Haywood and Charles Kelley and produced by Mark Bright (who’s worked with Carrie Underwood), “It’s Only” is the first single from Gokey’s RCA debut, which will reportedly hit stores in March of next year. The song details the trials of the jobless and the homeless and doesn’t shy away from the topic of faith, either (sample line: “Repo man’s gonna take his van/ Bobby’s givin’ up on God”).

Minutes before the premiere, Gokey himself called into 106.1 (it’s his hometown country station), to talk about the message of the song, which he described as his favorite off his upcoming album.

“It has such a touching lyric. It’s so beautiful. I love all the songs that appear on my CD, but this one … when I sing this song, a passion comes out of me,” Gokey said. “The song went past the mental element and came directly into my heart. I don’t know how to explain it. I feel it when I sing it.”

Gokey went on to say that he recorded “It’s Only” in Nashville — where he’s living while he puts the finishing touches on his album — and that the song will be available for digital download December 14.

Roughstock.com: Danny Gokey – “It’s Only”:

Throughout the course of his Top 3 stay on American Idol this year, Danny Gokey showcased a propensity to sing modern country music songs from the likes of Rascal Flatts and given the fact that Gokey had a propensity to ‘oversing’ from time to time (remember his bum note singing “Dream On?”), Danny was likely to follow in Rascal Flatts’ footsteps into country music. He not only did that but he joined Kellie Picker and Carrie Underwood as members of the 19/Sony Music Nashville team. Officially part of RCA Nashville, Danny Gokey went into the studio with Mark Bright and this song is the first single off of Gokey’s 2010 release.

When Danny signed his deal he said that he loved the fact that he could sing mainstream songs which had messages and didn’t hide his faith, something he does with “It’s Only.” With a voice that recalls Larry Stewart of Restless Heart at times and Lionel Richie in others, Gokey sings a message song that proclaims that love can and is all around us from various places, including Jesus and church. This is a song that recalls “Jesus Takes The Wheel,” in that it melds a message of faith and love and giving one’s self up to a higher power in a time of need. The production from Mark Bright is crisp and never over the top. You can hear the acoustic mandolin and fiddle in the background while Gokey singls the message-filled lyric in a soft, tender and tuneful way.

While there will be many, many cynical people who wonder why Gokey didn’t just go completely CCM (this song will likely cross-over to those stations), it’s hard to argue with the first results of his new deal with 19/RCA Nashville. “It’s Only” is a smartly produced song that proves that Danny Gokey can sing and the vocalist does have a place in country music. My only caution for Danny is that he limit, like Underwood has, the amount of songs that directly reference Jesus. Country fans are the religious, family type but they also don’t wanna be preached to on a daily basis. With all of that said, this one is a perfect winter/spring single and a good lead-off track for a new artist to release to radio.

EW.com | Music Mix: Danny Gokey debuts new single ‘It’s Only’: What do you think?
:

American Idol second runner-up (and wearer of questionable eyeglasses) Danny Gokey debuted his new song, “It’s Only,” on Milwaukee radio station FM 106.1 today. The track, which is the lead single of Gokey’s upcoming RCA Nashville country album, was reportedly written by Lady Antebellum’s Dave Haywood and Charles Kelley and produced by Carrie Underwood collaborator Mark Bright. Sounding a little like Five for Fighting (at least in my opinion), “It’s Only” is a big, emotional ballad and definitely the type of tune Gokey fans wanna hear. Personally, I kinda detest the dude and his overly jazzy LensCrafter frames but I’m also a loyal Adam Lambert fan (I’ve had Lambert’s new single, “For Your Entertainment,” on repeat all day today). That being said, I could totally see this song becoming a big country hit for Gokey.

zap2it.com: ‘It’s Only’ Danny Gokey’s first single — so listen
:

Danny Gokey’s first single has hit the radio — and it’s not quite the big belter you might expect.

The No. 3 finisher on “American Idol” last season got his first airplay on a station in his hometown of Milwaukee Friday morning with the single “It’s Only.” The song was written by Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood of Lady Antebellum and produced by Mark Bright, who’s worked with Carrie Underwood.

As you might expect with that crew, the song has a country vibe to it. There are also hints of inspirational music — also no surprise, given Gokey’s background as a church music director. What’s largely missing, though, is the big voice that made Gokey a favorite on “Idol.” Only in the last 30 seconds or so does he really rev up.

The song will be available for download in December; Gokey’s first album is due in March.

ExpressMIlwaukee.com: Wow, the New Danny Gokey Song Is… Just, Wow

Milwaukee’s country station, FM 106.1, this morning debuted Danny Gokey’s first single, “It’s Only,” and it’s a country song alright, a weepy, string-swept ballad with ample twang and an inspiration message that reminds us no matter how bad the economy is, Jesus will take the wheel.

It’s remarkable how well Gokey understands the cultural values and coded politics of contemporary country music. Singing of an unemployed worker facing the repo man and questioning his faith in God, Gokey sings, “He needs a hand up and not a handout.” Seems that Obama was misguided about the stimulus pacakge: It turns out that only God’s love can help you overcome the recession, Gokey assures us in a song that, like every big country hit, leaves the aftertaste of communion waffers in your mouth.

Examiner.com: American Idol contestant Danny Gokey releases first single

Season 8 American Idol contestant Danny Gokey released his first single “It’s Only” last week. Gokey made it to the top 3 on Season 8 before being voted off. He had a soulful voice reminiscent of Doobie Brother’s singer Michael McDonald. Gokey stole the fans’ hearts during auditions when he shared his story saying his drive for trying out for the show was because of his wife who had passed away.

Gokey is following in the footsteps of Idol winner Carrie Underwood by going country. His album is anticipated to be released in March 2010. When speaking of his single Danny said “The song went past the mental element and came directly into my heart. I don’t know how to explain it. I feel it when I sing it.” Congratulations Danny!

The only opinion that matters is the fans and the people buying the music. LOVE IT! Can’t wait to hear more!

Yeah, those were mixed reviews alright. I think the only descent ones were the first two. EW’s review I could’ve done w/o, but whoever wrote did say that they could totally see this song being a hit for Danny. Plus, there’s was no need to throw in there that they “detest him and his glasses” or whatever. You’re reviewing the song. Who cares whether you like the artist or not.

But like Michelle said, the only opinion that matters is the fans and the people buying the music. With that being said, I love the song and I’m totally looking forward to getting the album come March :-)
