Michelle’s MSMC NY Concert Recap
September 29, 2009 by Owlki
Jen and I flew in from Milwaukee not really knowing what to expect, except that this was Danny Gokey’s first solo concert (Post American Idol Tour) and it was supposed to be one hour long. We were excited but really had no idea what songs he was going to sing.
The crowd was growing anxious as the clock said 7:10pm. The band members came out on stage getting their instruments and microphones ready. The crowd assembled to hear Danny Gokey’s first solo concert (Post American Idol Tour) was excited and rose to their feet and started chanting – “Danny! Danny! Danny! In a few short minutes Danny emerged from behind stage and was ready to get the crowd rockin!
Jen and I first looked around the auditorium filled with students, alumni, families, and fans from all over the country wondering what the crowd was going to be like. Duuuhhh!! We are on a COLLEGE campus and COLLEGE students like to party. Front row center stage were MSMC students ready to sing, dance, and enjoy the concert. They set the tone for the evening and were leading the crowd in support of Danny’s first solo concert.
Danny said he was going to take us on a journey tonight from where he was when he started in AI journey to where he is now – signed with 19/RCA records to record a country album. He said we would hear a little bit of everything tonight and the crowd was ready to eat it up.
Make no mistake about it, everyone in that auditorium was there for one reason and one reason only – to see DANNY GOKEY! There would be no confusion as to who was clapping for who or which idol had more fan support! This was Danny’s night to shine. This was his coming out party and am I thrilled I was there to be a part of it!
1. P.Y.T – the crowd was on their feet for the entire song dancing and singing along to P.Y.T. Danny looked very good (Hot!) in his black vest, powder blue button down shirt, black jeans and cowboy boots with this WHTM glasses. The band sounded fantastic. Danny’s band sounded better to me than the AI Tour Band. P.Y.T is a fan and crowd favorite and always gets everyone dancing!
2. September – O.K., I love this song since it was September and the month of my birthday! This sounded waaaaayyyy better than when he did it on idol. Danny – you’ve been practicing! J
3. Heard It Through The Grapevine – audition song, only the entire song! Amazing! Nobody does this song better than Danny.
4. Sign, Sealed Delivered, (I’m yours) – staying with the Motown theme. Crowd was still on the feet the entire time – dancing and singing and clapping to every song!
5. Ain’t Too Proud to Beg – another crowd favorite and the crowd is standing this entire time!
6. What Hurts The Most – this is my favorite Danny Gokey song and he said this was his best selling song of American Idol. Danny always sings it with such passion and emotion, you can’t help but feel everything right along with him. Always heartfelt, always amazing!
7. Jesus Take The Wheel – this was my favorite song on the show until he sang What Hurts The Most. I still love it and I still like his version better than Carrie Underwood’s!
8. I Can Only Imagine – Danny said he was going back to his gospel roots for this one. There was not a dry eye in the house for this song. Danny said he would see Sophia in heaven again one day **tears** Simply beautiful, heartfelt and amazing!
9. Stand By Me – very good! This song grows on me every time I hear it!
10. Life is a Highway – OMG, he ROCKED this song! I didn’t think it was possible, but he totally took the country out of this song and rocked the roof off of the auditorium. Everyone was jamming and the band was jamming and jumping up and down. Danny introduced his band members. I only know Ivan Santiago (guitar) Def Santiago (guitar) Mr. TalkBox – Byron Chambers on the keyboard, and I did not get the names of the drummer, horn players or backup singers. LOVED IT! If this is what his “Country” is going to sound like, we are in for a real treat! J
11. Maria, Maria – this was the same song he did on tour with his salsa moves, beautiful and awesome! His dancing is amazing!
12. Smooth – another Santana song – amazing! Showing off his salsa moves here, he spontaneously grabbed a student from the front row and invited her to come on stage with him to dance! What a lucky girl! She did great!
13. You Are So Beautiful – this was a fan favorite from American Idol and he did not disappoint! Another one of my favorites. So heartfelt, so beautiful!
14. My Wish – he ended with his inspiration talk and then My Wish from the tour. He also talked about SHF and how he will integrate his foundation into his music. He wanted to play a DVD/Video from SHF but the venue could not accommodate that request in the auditorium so they had it playing out in the foyer of the auditorium after the show.
We weren’t sure what would happen after the show and went outside to see if he would come out to sign autographs and take pictures. After about 10 minutes we heard screaming from inside the building and he had come out INSIDE to sign autographs. We walked back into the building to wait in line. There were probably a few hundred people waiting to get autographs. Danny was sitting down and the MSMC staff were directing people to get their autographs and exit the building. After about 15-20 minutes they announced he had to leave and he started rushing – they wanted to clear the building. We were at the back of the line and rushed – they did not allow pictures with him and at one point were down right RUDE! Danny was so sweet and tried to accommodate every fan.
All I can say about this show was it was simply AMAZING! Energetic, joyful, passionate, soulful, emotional, funny, inspirational, motivational – Danny Gokey is the complete package! Danny connects with the audience, with his fans, with everyone he meets. You could totally tell that Danny put this show together with picking his band, the songs he was going to sing, the integration with SHF (they were selling T-Shirts, and bracelets at the show. At first, I thought this might be his only concert like this, but I have a feeling that there is more of these concerts to come! With his album not coming out until March, 2010 – look for more of these smaller concert venues to come!
Danny mentioned in between songs that Tuesday he meets with his producers and starts “Laying down” 5 songs. He said he could not release the name of the producer until Tuesday, but it was the same one as Carrie Underwood ! LOL Danny you can’t keep a secret and neither can we! J
Has any other American Idol Top Ten finalist done a Solo Concert yet? This was more than I expected, it went more than one hour, Danny was enjoying every minute of it and so were we!. To rehearse, memorize the lyrics for 10 additional songs (4 from the tour) in a week and a half is an incredible feat and Danny you not only pulled it off, you showed all of your fans why you will be successful for many years to come. J One heart touching many…Danny you touched our hearts, you are our Hero and our Idol – thank you for a wonderful night! I can’t think of a better way to celebrate my birthday!

eBay: Danny Gokey’s Tour Clothes
OK, I have no idea if these are for real or not. I tried to DM Danny about them and didn’t get an answer but it seems pretty legit. You’ll have to make your own call as the price is pretty high already. Please let me know if you know one way or another if this is legit.

R-squared’s MSMC NY Concert Review
My husband and I arrived early in Newburgh on Sunday, so we walked around Mount Saint Mary College, and I reflected on the statuary. The doors opened, and we sat in the middle of the Aquinas Hall Theatre, on the right side, but not for long! Everyone stood up when Danny appeared on the stage, so we were glad to be able to move ALL the way to the right, and get a clear view.
Danny sat down, and asked everyone to sit down, during my favorite part of the concert, when he sang “Jesus Take the Wheel,” beautifully and gently. During “Smooth,” HE was smooth, and I was glad to see he found a salsa dance partner in a staff member! Danny sang accompanied by just one instrument on talk shows, and I hope he’ll also do so during stage performances in the future, so we can more clearly hear both him and the talented soloists in his band.
After the concert, Danny changed and came around to the entrance, but there was a crowd. When we returned later, it had cleared somewhat, so I observed him briefly as he listened to some fans: he looked like a porcelain figure. I smiled, and we quietly left.
