Examiner.com: Interview with Danny Gokey from American Idol Season 8 regarding Sophia’s Heart Foundation

by Kim Reed

After losing his 27-year old wife Sophia Gokey to a congenital heart disorder last year, Danny Gokey came to Washington, DC to escape. The young, grief-stricken widower said “I just left Milwaukee and traveled to Kansas City, Nashville, DC and other places to get my mind off of it.”

Before taking the stage last week at the Verizon Center, Danny Gokey spoke to the Examiner.com regarding the Foundation he established in honor of Sophia.

Danny Gokey said he struggled financially when his wife was in the hospital. “I had to work hard, long hours, and put all of the money in to the medical situation” Gokey said. To ease the financial burden for other families he created Sophia’s Heart Foundation because he said, “that is the way I was raised.”

Although he is busy with the Idols tour, Gokey still devotes time to the Foundation and even took part in meetings earlier that day. The eight-month old Foundation has a lot of momentum right now and “has grown so much because of the show” he said.

Danny Gokey is currently mapping out the Foundation’s vision and working to establish a bricks-and-mortar facility. He proudly said the Foundation is ready to give away medical scholarships and will be rolling out a new Web site in two weeks. The new interactive Web site was created by a professional technology company for $10,000.

“Sophia’s Heart Foundation is dedicated to kids and helping families in hardship.”
