Danny Gokey Interview with WBGL: 3 Country Songs

I wasn’t able to hear all of Danny’s interview on WBGL this morning. Something was wrong with the broadcast. They did say they would run it again on Thursday morning. I did hear Danny talk about what kind of record he would like to make. He said R&B with a latin fusion. But, he also said he would be open to a modern country soul, with no twang. He also said he was singing 3 country songs on tour, but with no twang. I know he is singing What Hurts The Most and My Wish, but I’m not sure what other country song he is singing. Maybe, Jesus Take The Wheel?
He also said that he doesn’t have a contract yet, but there is work going on behind the scenes and that he was talking to record companies. I was hoping he would say he was close to getting a deal, but he didn’t give a timeline.
I liked his response to a question about how much he was able to talk about his faith while on the show. He said he had discussions with Adam and they agreed to disagree and that it was interesting to talk to Adam about it. He said he never shoves religion in anyone’s face and he thinks he shows his faith more in deeds rather than words. He said there are some Christians who wanted him to go on the show and talk about Jesus, Jesus, Jesus – but he did not do that. His actions spoke for him. That’s about all I heard, so I am looking forward to hearing the whole interview on Thursday.

is leaning toward doing a country ablum…Know he said he

Danny said in the Fox6 interview he was meeting with Sony Nashville so I wouldn’t be surprised if he went Country. Maybe he is seeing how people react to the songs on the tour?

I prefer for him to do what he originally wanted to do, but he can sing anything. I am sure he will put out an awesome album regardless of genre.

As Cheryl mentioned above, I would rather he go with his original genre, country is about the only music I don’t care for (and there is plenty of it here in Texas), but I also will buy anything he puts out. I am sure he will put some passion into whatever he sings and it sound great.

Danny said he was singing 3 country songs. We know he is singing WHTM, MY WISH, and I thought maybe JTTW, but it could be a new one. Maybe he will sing I Hope You Dance. He sang that in Hoolywood week and it was amazing!

I really wanted him to sing YASB and am actually surprised that he is not singing that song – it was possibly his most moving performance. He is only singing 4 songs. PYT, WHTM, MyWish, and another country song.
I think it is very possible that Danny is going to do Country. I really wanted him to stick to R&B/Soul with a Latin fusion, because that is what he has talked about all season and I think it is important for any singer to stick with who they are and not let someone else steer them into a different genre. I believe he can be successful as a country singer, but once he puts out a country album it will be very difficult for him to do anything else, ecxept perhaps a Christian album.
I want him to be happy with whatever choice he makes. I just hope he doesn’t sign with a record company just because he thinks he needs to sign as soon as possible. I would almost prefer for him to wait until he gets the deal that fits who he is and what his mission is.
His mission of mixing his music with his foundation seems like it might work better with R&B/Soul or mainstream music. His plan is to help kids who are disadvantaged in the city of Milwaukee and then expand that to other places. Milwaukee’s population is 33% African American and Latino. It will be important for him to draw interest from that population, particularly young people because that is what his foundation is for-kids. I’m not so sure country music will have as much appeal to young people or to a large minority population.
Whatever kind of music Danny puts out, I will listen to it and buy it. But I also want SHF to be very successful. Danny talks about doing concerts that touch children and make them believe they can get out of a bad situation or make them feel that there is hope in their lives. The key will be to get children to connect with the music and I think children connect less with country music than they do with more mainstream music.
Ever since Danny tweeted that he was going to Nashville for important meetings, I have been thinking about this. I apologize for the lengthy post, but I just wanted to get my thoughts out and who better to do it with than the gokey girls?
I may be way off base with this and it doesn’t matter what type of music he puts out, because in the end it’s Danny’s talent and determination that are going to make him succeed in both his music and foundation, and we all know how much talent and determination Danny has!!

signing with 19E? I remember they didn’t like Danny, if that’s
the case, would they promote him like they should? Do you think
they would be behind him 100%?? I don’t know much about Sony
Nashville, I can’t help but wonder why he is singing 3 country
songs…Maybe they were offering something that 19E wasn’t…
What do you think?? I know how he wants to help others with
his music, what a wonderful thing to do…That’s our Danny

Cheryl, You are so right about YASB, I wish that he would sing
that instead of WHTM…When he sang YASB, I was so moved..
That’s what Danny does so well, he moves you with his music…
He put so much heart into it, he literally was singing for his
place into the top two…Which to me, he was robbed…After
his performance I just knew he was going to be in the finals..
But things didn’t work out…..He did the best he could with
YASB, which was fantastic..Don’t know what else he could have
done…….

karen I think Sony Nashville is a distibutor for 19 Entertainment, Kind of like Sony Jive records and Sony RCA records are also distributors for 19 Entertainent. So if Dnny signs with Sony Nashville he is still with 19 Entertainment. And, you are right, I am not a big fan of 19 Entertainment. I just feel like they won’t promote Danny as much as Adam or Kris or Allison.
Bottom line is I want so, so much for Danny that all this record deal stuff makes me nervous. Regardless of what happens, I will be happy for Danny (and for us!!!) when he signs.

Danny has to know that we are all on pins and needles about this record deal. I will be a little ticked at him if he writes IMPORTANT meetings in his tweet and they are with SHF. I know SHF is important to Danny but he knows his fans are waiting on news of a record deal. He also mentioned in that radio interview a couple of weeks ago to be on the lookout for news of his album. I can’t imagine that Danny would say these things to his fans if he wasn’t in Nashville for his music. What do you all think? Is is possible he is only in Nashville for meetings on SHF? I don’t want to get my hopes up for nothing again.

Cheryl, I can understand your concern, but I don’t think you have to worry about the type of albgum Danny will make and his ability to connect with children. He will connect with children regardless of what type of music he sings. I also loved YASB, and felt it was a very moving performance – but it’s a remake of a classic song – most kids have never heard of that song. If you look at the original artists from the songs Danny is singing, they are more “relevant” – Rascal Flats, Carrie Underwood, Michael Jackson, etc. And kids typically do not like ballads.
In my opinion, one of the reasons that Kris Allen won AI, was his ability to take a very relevant song -”Heartless” by Kanye West, and make it his own.
Danny’s fan base appears to be older 20, 30, 40, 50’s. He does not appear to have the ‘tween following. I could be wrong, but his fan base appears to be older.
With all of the being said, Danny attracts fans of all ages. I believe we will all follow him regardless of the type of music.
I think Danny can still reach out to children through his foundation regardless of the type of music he sings.
Another thought, his commercial album could be one type of music and the music he sings for his foundation could be another. I truly believe he will be a cross over artist and very successful!!!!

I was so happy to get that tweet from Danny this evening! I knew after re-reading his previous tweet that he was trying to tell his fans something without really saying anything. We just had to read between the lines. I hope that things go well with Sony and that they treat him right. Dealing with 19E can be very difficult (as we’ve seen from past dealing with other Idols). He seems to have a fairly good relationship with them so I hope they promote him to his full potential. I’ve seen what happens when they don’t promote the artist and the artist is left scratching and clawing their way to get to the top of the heap. It’s very frustrating.

Let’s hope they recognize great talents, it’s their job, right. I think there is a lot of details that we don’t know about and they are the reason it has taken longer for Danny to get signed. I don’t think it has anything to do with them not being as interested in him, how can they not be interested, Danny is amazing.

I think anyone that 19E signs will be promoted 100%. After all it’s all about money. And if Danny signs with the other branch of 19, different division than Kris or Adam, then there really isn’t any competition there, right? Well, that’s the way it seems to me.

Hi, I think that timing is everything. Right now with the finale still being fresh in everyone’s minds, the public and fans are anxious to buy those albums. If a lot of time passes before Danny gets an album out a lot of the excitement will have died down. Not for the true die hard fans but for the average person who watched and liked Danny. You know the saying, “Strike while the fire’s Hot” I think that’s how you say it.

Exactly, that is why he should be signed now.
I think that Danny will sing his songs his own special way. Whether they call it country or pop or whatever, I believe that his music will be enjoyed by everyone who hears him. Some of Carrie Underwood’s songs, which are supposed to be labeled ‘country’ are also played on regular pop stations. I believe Danny’s music will be played on all types of stations.

Vickie I would love him to get a record deal as soon as possible but it also depends on the deal he’s given take Kristy Lee cook for example she got a record deal after the finale and her cd came out September 16, 2008 but she got left over songs from Carrie underwood and no promotion I would rather he get a record deal later if it means more work put on it and more promotion take Elliot yamin for example his cd came out on March 20, 2007 almost a year later but it went GOLD I would rather he have a gold record 2 years from now then a cd coming out and flopping in the fall
but I would love for him to get a great record deal right now but it would have to be great

Yes, Kristy Lee’s CD didn’t do well but I don’t think it had anything to do with the promotion on her behalf. I think people thought that she was too much like Carrie Underwood and she didn’t have a unique voice. Elliot on the other hand has a very recognizable voice and I think he even sang better than Kristy Lee. Danny has an extremely recognizable voice, I think. Do you remember Paula saying that during the competition? I just believe that’s the difference between Kristy Lee and Danny. Danny is a much better singer and he sings with so much emotion. Everyone doesn’t just hear his songs they feel his songs.

yes their is a difference I was just using her cd as an example of getting a fast record deal and no promotion or dedication in it at all and I was using Elliot as an example as if the artist is good enough people will still buy it no matter how long it takes to get it released

That is so true. Danny won’t have any problem selling albums one way or the other. There is no stopping that kind of talent. Like Randy Travis said on the show, about Danny, singers pray for the ability to sing with that kind of emotion, for Danny it just comes naturally.

Danny will be successful though I just have to remind myself that even if his first album flops(which it won’t) even if he has to go back to his day job for a while(which he won’t) he will have a breakout album whether it comes this year next year ten years twenty years or thirty years he will have an incredibly record that will sail to the top and I don’t care how many floppers(their won’t be any) it takes for him to get their

I really hope that Danny knows this site, because it would make him laugh and feel good about things. I’m like the rest of you and don’t know what hit me when I heard Danny’s audition for AI. I said to my boyfriend that there is a voice I have been waiting for a long time and my boyfriend totally agreed with me, that Danny Gokey’s voice is one of the best he has ever heard. We actually skipped the AI final, because Danny was voted off and just could not believe what happened.I know he is going to have a brilliant career, because he has such an amazing voice which can really reach and touch you.This kind of talent is hard to find these days. I’m also sure that he has a huge amount of overseas fans.

Hello and welcome. We all enjoy this website too. Amy does a great job keeping all the updates on Danny.
I just wanted to let you know that if you are on one page and think no one is there, they might be on a different page chatting away. It took me a while to figure that out.
